Regional Researcher – Caribbean Region

JOB PURPOSE

As Amnesty International’s lead expert on the Caribbean (with a special focus on countries as Cuba, Haiti and Dominican Republic, though not exclusively), this position coordinates the development and implementation of overarching research strategies to deliver impact on agreed priorities, providing research expertise, sociopolitical analysis and guidance to develop strong human rights programs.

Amnesty International will be implementing plans focusing especially (though not exclusively) on people on the move and highly repressive environments for the exercise of human rights. It also develops reactive, and crisis work as needed. The position also implies working on a regular basis with Amnesty International section in Puerto Rico.

This is a hybrid remote position.

ABOUT YOU

A successful researcher with a demonstrated commitment to human rights, you will have knowledge and experience of researching the human rights issues in the Caribbean region. You will be able to understand and express ideas in both English and Spanish, drafting texts in a variety of styles, for a range of audiences. A knowledge of French or Haitian Creole is a plus.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To lead on the development and implementation of overarching research and campaigning strategies to deliver impact in relation to agreed priorities involving countries in the Caribbean, including strategies to identify the most effective ways to address human rights concerns;
  • To monitor, research, investigate and analyse human rights-related developments in order to provide timely, accurate, independent and impartial assessments and expert advice on the human rights situation related to countries in the Caribbean.
  • To organize, take part in and lead, where agreed, field research and other missions, leading specifically on information-gathering, fact-finding, analysis and assessment of human rights concerns.
  • To represent Amnesty International to external stakeholders, develop and maintain effective constituencies of public and confidential contacts and partners in and outside the organization.
  • To write reports and other materials for publication and contribute to the development of strategies and plans for research and campaigning.
  • To work directly with local section Puerto Rico, working in coordination and supporting them with their plans.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Extensive first-hand experience working in human rights and field research. Proven experience of undertaking human rights research and complex analysis in the Caribbean, including first-hand experience working with Caribbean organizations and stakeholders.
  • Specialist knowledge on international human rights law in general, as well as political, social, legal, economic, ethnic, racial and gender issues in them.
  • First-hand experience working with survivors of human rights violations and their families and ability to build working relationships with them, particularly when they are under distress
  • More than five years first-hand experience working on research related with Caribbean countries. Understanding of the debates and experience working on racial discrimination, people on the move and highly repressive environments for the exercise of human rights.
  • Ability to exercise good political judgment, thorough analysis and diplomacy to develop effective strategies to impact on human rights in the region
  • Ability to deal in a sensitive and understanding manner with a variety of people, including survivors of human rights violations and others who may be distressed;
