We give local actors the equipment, training and support needed to safely gather verified video evidence of human rights violations and effectively distribute it to those who can create change. As a result of our actions, perpetrators have been brought to trial and their means of oppression exposed to millions of viewers worldwide.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Regional Programme Manager will report to the Senior Director of Programming and Operations (SDPO) and will work closely with Senior Management Team. They will take on primary responsibility for the management and development of the allocated projects and their operations. They will manage field offices and staff working on the same projects while following the organisation’s strategic vision and work methodology under the guidance and supervision of the SDPO to ensure that Videre’s work makes a substantial impact.

Key Relationships: The post-holder will be working closely with projects’ offices, Programming and Operations Department, Research Departments, Technology and Innovation Department, and Senior Management Team.

Location: This is a remote working role and we are looking for someone who could operate between GMT -1 to GMT +6 time zones or in East Africa.

Salary: Based on location.

Work in Challenging Environments As part of this role you will occasionally be required to deal with urgent problems outside the office hours, and will need to ensure that your team and staff have the support and resources they need to do their work well. You will also encounter and will need to deal with sensitive and potentially traumatic situations and realities. In turn, you will be provided with the support and training needed to do this work by a small but dedicated international team.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

The role will be responsible for the management of a maximum of three projects.

Project Management and Development (75%)

  • Context Analysis and Strategy

    • Analyse context of the allocated projects, political and security situation, trends, information and news that might influence projects’ development, analyse barriers and opportunities.
    • In liaison with the SDPO establish and oversee the delivery of projects’ distribution strategy.
    • Create, maintain, and develop project work plans in alignment with the organisation’s vision and mission. Track and monitor goals, objectives, and activities.
  • Project Management

    • In liaison with the SDPO manage design processes of projects.
    • Identify strategies and solutions for improving projects’ efficiency and effectiveness by identifying bottlenecks and challenges in achieving their objectives while working with different project teams.
    • Oversee the holistic security of the assigned projects with the support from the SDPO and the Programming and Operations team. Oversee and guide the training and ongoing support of activists and their networks so they can safely document human rights violations.
    • Mange budgets efficiently.
    • Contribute to financial donor-reporting.
    • In liaison with the manager of Monitoring and Evaluation team support and guide staff in an effective reporting and analysis of project activities to drive a continued improvement and shared learning across the organization.

Line Management (25%)

  • Manage project teams, ensure their wellbeing, identify areas for learning and development, and address their needs and challenges they face as needed.
  • Oversee work environments; address logistical, security, and health and safety needs.
  • Identify the needs and execute the processes for hiring new staff or external consultants.
  • Identify missing skills or knowledge within and across projects and liaise with the SDPO to find solutions.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain direct and regular communication with the SDPO to provide updates about project work, security, evaluation and project analysis.
  • Undertake other duties which may be reasonably required and contribute to the wider activity and the overall success of the Programming and Operations Department or the organization.
  • Liaison with the Global Operations Manager for an effective and smooth-functioning of network trainings and security risk assessments.

PERSONAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

Essential

  • Demonstrates integrity, follow Videre’s values and ethical standards, and promote the vision, mission, and strategic goals of the organisation.

  • Experience of successful project development and management with a strong track record of creating impact in difficult environments.
  • A solid understanding of the human rights sector and a solid knowledge of East Africa history, socio-economic, political and cultural context.
  • Experience working in hostile environments and being sensitive to the logistical and security challenges that this entails.
  • Strong decision-making ability, ability to resolve problems quickly and carefully while under pressure and in situations of uncertainty.
  • Organises and accurately completes multiple tasks by establishing priorities while taking into consideration special assignments, frequent interruptions, deadlines, available resources and multiple reporting relationships.
  • Plans, coordinates and organises workload while remaining aware of changing priorities and competing deadlines.
  • Good capacity and interest in managing people.
  • Excellence in strategic thinking and the ability to see the ‘big picture’ – taking a global overview of complex issues.

Desirable

  • At least five years of professional experience working in the field of human rights, international development, or a related field.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in digital security including encryption, secure communications and privacy tools.
  • Strong relationships and contacts with local, regional and international actors in the human rights sector.
  • Knowledge of any language(s) from East Africa region.
