Regional Health & Nutrition Advisor East Africa
Contract until 31.03.2023 (with possible extension)
Organisation Description: Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. (www.thejohanniter.org) is a German Christian non-governmental organisation, dedicated to excellence in the field of first aid, ambulance service, social service programmes and other projects in the medical and social field. The Federal Headquarters are based in Berlin, Germany. Johanniter International Assistance is the operational unit for humanitarian aid, development co-operation and emergency relief, implementing and supporting projects in Health, Nutrition, WASH as well as Food Security & Income Generation worldwide.
Background
Johanniter is implementing a two-and-a-half-year regional humanitarian response to the IDPs and refugee crisis in South Sudan, Kenya and Uganda by improving access to health, nutrition, psychosocial support and WASH. This project will be implemented directly by Johanniter in South Sudan while implemented through national partners in Kenya and Uganda. Reinforcing collaboration with local authorities including line Government ministries and other partners in all countries remain a key aspect of the program.
In a Nutshell
You will:
- be responsible for ensuring quality health and nutrition programming in South Sudan, Kenya and Uganda
- provide regular technical input to the regional programmes in the same countries
- support capacity building of staff and implementing partners in the region
- ensure that all programs are aligned with Johanniter International’s global strategy and country strategies
- undertake frequent monitoring visits to those countries to oversee the quality of all programs
- develop standard operating procedures and guidelines as applicable.
What you will do:
Quality Management
- Provide health and nutrition technical input in Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan, promoting best practices in health and nutrition interventions, in accordance with the project objectives and plan
- Develop standard operating procedures and share the relevant health and nutrition guidelines as required for the programmes
- Provide technical input to programme reports and innovative proposals in coordination with the Programme Managers and Senior Programme managers, keeping informed the Regional Programme Manager at all time
- Provide technical guidance for the required medical supplies in all three countries to ensure quality medical and nutrition supplies are in place.
- Support the country PMEAL teams to strengthen the data collection tools and methods, review and analyse programme data, assisting teams to identify project gaps and/or areas for improvement and to adapt the activities as necessary.
- Regularly visit country offices and programme sites (50% South Sudan, 25% Kenya and 25% Uganda) together with country programme teams to monitor the quality of care being provided
- Promote the integration of cross cutting themes such as protection, gender mainstreaming and beneficiary participation in the programmes
- Promote best practices in health and nutrition programmes
Capacity Building
- Support country programme teams in the organisation of health and nutrition trainings ensuring the quality of training materials and trainers
- Together with Programme Managers and Senior Programme Managers develops capacity building plans for staff
Representation and Communication
- Together with country office teams, network with national health authorities, UN agencies and NGOs working in health when required/requested
- Participate in the global JIA Health Group
Other
- Carry out other tasks as requested to by the HoM
What you bring:
- Medical Sciences degree e.g. Bachelor/Master of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health.
- At least 6 years’ experience working with NGOs/lNGOs in humanitarian or development contexts including internationally.
- Experience in GBV including the clinical management of rape, mental health, nutrition and the management of clinics is an asset.
- Thorough knowledge of the Sphere Standards, Integrated Community Case Management, Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses and Community Based Management of Acute Malnutrition will be required.
- Experience and qualifications in preparing and delivering trainings and building the capacity of staff is essential, using a participatory approach and adult learning methods.
- Demonstrated experience in providing technical input to proposals and donor reporting.
- A solid understanding of monitoring and evaluation qualitative and quantitative methods including the ability to develop/improve data collection tools,
- Demonstrated strength in data analysis
- Knowledge and work experience in at least one of the countries is required and a good understanding of the South Sudan crisis is an asset.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English required and regional/ local languages are a plus.
- Demonstrated planning and organisational skills
- Experience in managing projects is essential, with experience managing multi-country programmes an asset
- Skilled in using Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
- Effective communication
- Ability to prioritize tasks
- Proactive approach and hands on ability
- Willingness and ability to travel frequently is a must
What we offer:
Remuneration: 50828 – 53503€/annum gross
(Johanniter AVR DWBO Annex Johanniter internal tariff and relevant previous experience).
Benefits: Social security (lump sum 375€/month for expats not under German social security); rental contribution 300 €/month; international insurance package; 29 days annual leave; yearly home flight (for contracts > 1 year); Cost of Living Allowance (1050/month)
