WHO Foundation

ABOUT US

As the World Health Organization (WHO) commemorates its 75th anniversary, its role to promote health, expand universal health coverage, and respond to health emergencies has never been more important. Even as the public health threat of the COVID-19 pandemic diminishes, new disease outbreaks, such as cholera, Ebola, and Marburg demand rapid containment. At the same time, climate change is causing more severe natural disasters, with lasting health and economic impacts. The WHO is tackling these problems with a myriad of organizations, ministries of health and local actors. The solution sets provided by this consortium of partners require a wide range of partnerships and resources from philanthropists, corporations and individuals globally.

Launched in 2020 as a Swiss charity, the WHO Foundation (the Foundation) powers these initiatives that advance greater health equity globally by marshaling the resources of philanthropists, corporations, and individual donors to facilitate innovative partnerships between the public and private sectors. The Foundation invests in projects and ideas that have the greatest potential to improve health outcomes and rapidly catalyze impact. The Foundation’s mission is to ensure more resources get to where it is needed most either through charitable grants and donations, private sector capabilities and impact investing.

About the Development Department

The Development Department at the WHO Foundation is the resource mobilization arm of the Foundation and is led by the Chief Development Officer (CDO) who oversees three departments: Philanthropy (focusing on family foundations, high-net-worth individuals and philanthropists), Partnerships (focusing on corporate engagement) and Campaigns (focusing on the broader public/individual giving).

The focus of the Philanthropy Department is to engage with those partners that have the capacity to give substantial funds towards global health equity (7 figures and above). The engagement model of the Philanthropy team is to build trust with philanthropists and serve as an advisory partner to help them meet their philanthropic goals in addressing health inequities. The Philanthropy team does this by providing bespoke funding opportunities, either supporting WHO or other global health organizations, while also presenting transformative initiatives – either through charitable grants or impact investing – that would bring life-changing health resources to those who need them most.
