Action Against Hunger-USA is part of the Action Against Hunger International network, which provides humanitarian relief in over 40 countries worldwide in the sectors of nutrition, health, water/sanitation, and food security. Action Against Hunger-USA, an independent NGO, currently manages operations in 7 countries: Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia, Zambia and Haiti. Action Against Hunger-USA has over $92 million in programs, and approximately 2000 staff based in in the various country offices and the three Head Quarter Locations of New York City, Washington D.C, Nairobi. Additional growth is anticipated.

Summary of the Position

The Regional Communications Manager will support strategic communications to advance profile-raising, advocacy and fundraising goals. This position will contribute to the development and rollout of Action Against Hunger’s brand & campaign strategies while providing oversight for multimedia & public communication use. The Regional Communications Manager will actively enhance and grow Action Against Hunger’s profile to stakeholder audiences while elevating the organizations reputation as a reference point on key issues in the region.

Essential Job Duties

  • Develop & implement communication plans, content and materials in support of Action Against Hunger’s deliverables, including training modules, concept notes, reports, guidelines, and toolkits.
  • Provide inputs to the development and execution of communication priorities, recommending ways to enhance the impact of our programs & campaigns.
  • Maintain a perspective on the communications and outreach needs and identify opportunities for visibility and digital engagement, including media, profiling opportunities, conferences and meetings
  • In charge of production of advocacy and communication materials, e.g. capacity statements, briefs, videos, website stories, reports, social media assets and be responsible for media relations
  • Lead the development communication campaigns & key moments, including concept development, messaging, audience analysis, product development & engagement analysis.
  • Develop tools and products to influence communications, advocacy, partnerships & policy i.e. collateral, presentations, infographics, data
  • Coordinate field documentation for videographers & photographers to collect stories of our programs in action
  • Support capacity-building initiatives on communications expertise at regional & country level on branding, success stories, photography, digital media etc.
  • Regularly liaise with country, regional, HQ & network teams on communications, branding, visibility opportunities, media engagement, advocacy, content creation, information exchange and collaborative communication initiatives.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related discipline. Master’s degree preferred, but not essential.
  • Minimum 7-10 years in communications or public relations, or some combination as a journalist and PR/communications practitioner, preferably with an international NGO or non-profit
  • Strong knowledge of international development and humanitarian work
  • Fluent English speaker. Fluency in French or Spanish desirable.
  • Strong project management skills
  • Experience producing communications assets tailored to a range of different target audiences
  • Skilled photographer and writer (including story telling); videographer skills a plus
  • Ability to manage deadlines against a communication calendar
  • Ability and flexibility to manage work across time zones
  • Familiarity with campaign development & graphic design
  • Skilled problem solver, adept at identifying challenges and recommending solutions proactively
  • Outstanding presentation skills and general communications skills across diverse teams with differing technical backgrounds
  • Ability to translate highly technical source material into compelling, accessible content for a general audience
  • Strong interpersonal skills with sensitivity to local cultures and humanitarian principles
