What it’s like to work here

Designed Landscapes in the Lake District

Central & East Lakes portfolio falls within the UNESCO English Lake District World Heritage Site (WHS). The WHS documentation for the Lake District describes the outstanding universal value (OUV, i.e., international significance) of the Lake District landscape and identifies the contribution made by ‘Distinguished villas, gardens and formal landscapes that were added to augment its picturesque beauty’. The WHS individual valley descriptions identify many of the designed landscapes of C&E Lakes by name and demonstrate that as part of the Lake District collection, they should be considered as having outstanding universal value.

Central & East Lakes Designed Landscapes

The Merchant Villa Landscapes of Central & East Lakes such as Fell Foot and Aira Force reflect the informal C19 late Picturesque designed landscapes, often incorporating dramatic natural features and augmented with parkland, native woodland modified with exotic conifers, revetted carriageways and tracks, pineta, view-sheds, stone or steel features in the form of steps, bridges, seats, tunnels, viewing stations and pools. Boundaries are often vernacular drystone walls with some iron railings.

There are approximately 150 ha of designed landscapes including parkland and woodland, of which around 50 ha fall within a pay barrier needing high presentation standards. To deliver these presentation standards you will be working as part of a small team and will possess a range of practical estate management skills to help look after these important landscapes. The role will be based from Fell Foot Park. The work will be outdoors across the seasons and will be peripatetic, working at different sites across the central Lake District.

What you’ll be doing

In this role no two days are the same, you’ll:

  • be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings and machinery
  • work closely with a dedicated team of volunteers in helping to maintain visitor access to the designed landscapes of the Central and East Lakes
  • pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage others to love this area as much as you do. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions, rather than rushing away to the next task
  • make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard
  • build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the Trust and letting people know about the work you and the team are doing.
