Qualitative research support and analysis for Child Hearings project

Save the Children is launching a new global campaign to address the root causes of the dual, connected threats of economic inequality and catastrophic climate change. As part of the campaign we are working with Save the Children offices and members across the world to conduct a series of hearings with children. Our goal is to gather information from up to 60,000 children in 30 countries about how they are experiencing climate change and inequality, their demands for action on the issues, and how we can support them to campaign.

We are looking for a consultant to lend research expertise and support to this project, helping to advise on methodology and approach, set up a system for collating and analysing data, and conducting analysis of the outcomes of the hearings.

Objectives

· To advise on how we can ensure that the hearings are set up in a way that is in keeping with the campaign objectives of the project, but that is methodologically sound from a research perspective and will yield the information we need from children to shape our global campaign research and policy agenda and products.

· To lead the development of a coding and analysis system and framework for the campaign.

· To lead analysis of the outcomes from the hearings, identifying key messages from children and variations

Deliverables

• Feeding back on the data collection template and overall approach
• Developing and delivering training/learning sessions with facilitators
• Setting up the coding/analysis framework and supporting the team inputting data
• Qualitative Analysis of outcomes
• Work with survey lead to feedback on survey questions and approach, and triangulate qualitative data with survey data
• Reading draft global advocacy report and advising on how to faithfully reflect outcomes from the hearings
• Ad hoc support for facilitators and campaigners as needed.

Timescale

We are looking for the research support to commence in April and continue on a rolling, ad hoc basis until the finalisation of the campaign advocacy report at the end of September. The bulk of the work will be analysis, which we expect to take around 8 days spread between June, July and August.

Candidate profile

We are looking for a consultant with a high level of experience and expertise in qualitative research with children, preferably with experience of working in different country contexts (particularly middle and low income countries), as well as in multiple-country projects. Expertise on inequality and working with marginalised and vulnerable children is essential.

Contract

As a donor funded body, Save the Children is committed to ensuring our resources are used as efficiently as possible, in order that we can focus them on achieving maximum impact for children and that our arrangements with third party suppliers represent value for money. We expect this approach to be demonstrated from any contractor it does business with. The successful bidder will be asked to sign Save the Children’s standard services agreement.
