JOB BRIEF

The United States Institute of Peace is looking for a Publications Production Associate. The Publications Production Associate is responsible for typesetting and page layout of reports, books, and other publications products on the prevention, management, and peaceful resolution of international conflicts. This individual should be detail-oriented, organized, and have a strong knowledge of InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Excellent communication skills are a must, as this position will be part of USIP’s in-house publications team. Experience in proofreading and familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style is a plus.

This is a scope of work contractor position. The compensation for this contract position is $45.00 – $50.00 per hour.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Formats text, photos, and graphics into complete typeset products using established layouts and templates in InDesign

• Researches options for photos and graphics of topical relevance to specific products using feedback from authors, editors, and project teams

• Makes revisions and corrections to existing typeset files in response to edits provided by proofreaders and authors

• Reviews art files and proofs at all stages of the publication process to ensure products meet high-quality publishing standards

• Produces final files suitable for print and online publication, and packages archived files to prepare products for reprints and translations

• Assists with updating database records, tracking production schedules, monitoring cost estimates, and organizing project files

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required.

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in publishing, preferably including books and reports.

• Mastery of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Excel, Acrobat, Word. Provide samples of typesetting and design work.

• Knowledge of typesetting, design, and commercial printing and binding.

• Experience in project management and trafficking through databases.

• Familiar with proofreader’s marks, publishing terminology, Chicago, and AP style.

• Ability to work independently in a complex environment and strong interpersonal and communication skills.

• The position requires strong CS5 skills and attention to detail.
