Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is in the Strategic Communications Branch (SCB), Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in New York. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.

The Strategic Communications Branch (SCB) is OCHA’s communications and public advocacy team supporting headquarters and field operations in public outreach on humanitarian action. The Branch oversees senior leadership public advocacy and media, including the global spokesperson function, messaging and speeches, and social media.

The incumbent will report to the Chief of the Strategic Communications Branch.

Responsibilities

Public Information

  • Assists in the implementation of global communication strategies and campaigns to engage with identified target audiences on OCHA’s priority issues and major events, including the coordination of activities, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up actions and analyzing outcomes.
  • Updates and maintain lists of key external stakeholders, including journalists, editors and partners.
  • Distributes communication products to relevant audiences.
  • Supports media monitoring and analytics through an online service provider dashboard by collecting, organizing, and reporting key performance indicators (KPIs) from global print, online, broadcast, podcast, and social media sources for a complete view of the media landscape and performance of OCHA media products.
  • Contributes to the management of the corporate website including by updating content.
  • Provides logistical support to Branch-led initiatives and events including trainings, workshops and conferences.
  • Researches a broad scope of information sources, printed and electronic, and compiles and presents information for use in the preparation and production of communication products/services for target audiences.

Human Resources

  • Supports the HR and recruitment needs of the Branch Chief and Section Chiefs including by drafting job openings in Inspira, conducting preliminary assessments of applicants, and working with HR for finalization and onboarding.

Administration

  • Supports the Branch Chief with managing budget and finance related reporting including updating budget statistics to ensure funding for Branch operations.
  • Supervises and provides guidance and training to junior staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job – Specific Qualification

Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) or United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally administered test at Offices Away is required.

Work Experience

A minimum of 7 years of experience in public information, communications, public relations, administration and/or related area is required.

Experience in the production and dissemination of communications products and services is required.

Experience working in a media office or a news organization is required.

Experience in researching, drafting and editing content is desirable.

Experience providing administrative support to an office of the United Nations common system, or a comparable internal organization is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (written and oral) is required. Fluency of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

  • Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat.   • This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.
