Title: PSP Officer (Thematics Writer-Proposals-Reports)

Duty Station: Copenhagen, Denmark

Duration: 15 April – 31 December 2022

Contract Type: UNOPS International Specialist, IICA-2 (Local Specialist, Level LICA – 10)

Closing date: 22nd March 2022

Start date: 15 April 2022

Organizational context

This The Private Sector Partnerships Service (PSP) sits within UNHCR’s Division of External Relations (DER) and is responsible for mobilizing resources from the private sector for refugees. UNHCR have developed a $1 Billion Private Sector Fundraising Strategy 2018-2025. This strategy focuses on both Individual Giving and Private Partnerships and Philanthropy (PPH) and identifies priority fundraising markets and regions. As part of this strategy corporates, foundations and high net worth donors have been identified as key areas of PSP growth with a target set to double current income from Private Partnerships and Philanthropy (PPH) to USD 300 million by 2025.

As an integral Section of PSP, Private Partnerships & Philanthropy (PPH) raises funds from corporations, foundations and HNWIs against an ambitious target. PPH does this through the action of its established network of fundraisers located across 5 regions (i.e., Americas, Europe, Asia Pacific (APAC), Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and Africa) and the coordination provided by headquarters units in Copenhagen.

The PSP Thematics Unit sits in the Private Partnerships and Philanthropy Section and will play an important support role to the wider PSP Network across PSP Markets and including National Partners to achieve the ambitious USD 300 million target. In 2022, UNHCR will amplify efforts to fundraise for several key thematic areas. This would support an increase in softly earmarked funds whilst also responding to interest – both internal and external – to raise funds for or to support particular areas of activity.

PPH Thematics Unit leads PSP’s input into the broader DER approach to thematic fundraising across public and private sector audiences, and then ensuring alignment between DRRM and PSP in the creation of thematic fundraising packs. The unit will focus on developing thematic fundraising materials and packs, on core strategic themes, for Private Sector partners. This team works closely with PSU to identify budget space and activities, and with many other teams inside and outside of PPH as well was the thematic team in DRRM, which will be working together to develop joint packs for Government donors.

The PSP Officer (Thematics) function sits in the PSP Thematics Unit, is part of a multi-functional team, and reports to the Head of the Thematics Unit in Copenhagen. The PSP Thematics unit creates fundraising materials in support of large-scale thematic propositions to which PPH donors can contribute, regardless of contribution level, including donations under $100k; works closely and collaboratively with the Partnership Support Unit (PSU) to ensure that the activity and budgets included in fundraising materials are accurate and cleared by the field; works with PSU officers and PSP proposal development officers to create bespoke proposals for the highest value PPH donors, when needed; and leads capacity building among PPH fundraisers across the network to embrace a thematic approach to fundraising.

The position

This Under the overall supervision of the Head of the Thematics Unit, the PSP Officer (Thematics) is expected to identify the best match between donor interests and UNHCR thematic priorities within OL. The incumbent will also ensure the application of and adherence to UNHCR policies, procedures and SOPs throughout the contribution management cycle. ‘Setting it up right’ includes ensuring that PSP earmarked projects can be implemented, impact measured and reported on to build UNHCR’s reputation as a reliable partner to support further giving.

The main responsibility of the incumbent will be to create thematic fundraising packs and associated assets that will support PPH fundraisers in the PSP Network through ready-made offerings that donors and partners can contribute to, especially when their proposed contribution does not reach the $100k threshold for earmarking. They will translate technical language into accessible donor-friendly language, provide technical support for the development of identified PSP partnerships – including but not limited to brainstorming ideas of how to engage with a partner or prospect, contributing to the preparation of pitches, attending partner or prospect meetings and events based on the needs of account managers. The incumbent will work collaboratively with other technical colleagues, especially those in DRS and DRRM, to keep abreast of the latest developments in thematic areas that are of interest to PSP. The incumbent will also act as a focal point for PSP campaigns and provide technical clearance as needed.
