ActionAid Arab Regional office (AAAR) is looking for a Protection and Nexus Programming Advisor, who can support both the regional ActionAid office and local partner organisations in strengthening capacities and technical expertise skills around issues of protection and the nexus programming approach. The ActionAid Arab Region has its head office in Amman in Jordan, but has programs in Lebanon and Syria as well. Program activities are primarily implemented through partnership agreements with local organisations. The Advisor will be based at the head office in Jordan, but will cover program support in all three countries. The Advisor should therefore expect frequent travelling to Lebanon and primarily online support to Syria.

The Advisor role

The Protection and Nexus Programming Advisor will be expected to undertake multiple roles such as training, mentoring and capacity strengthening of ActionAid staff and local partners, providing technical advice and introduce new knowledge and latest trends, as well as support development and review of relevant policies and guidelines related to protection and nexus programming.

More specifically, the Advisor will:

  • Review and support the development of protection projects/programmes and ensure all Protection/SGBV in Emergencies programming are in adherence to interagency guidelines and standards with a focus on the importance of linkages between humanitarian and development interventions.
  • Support AAAR and local partners in research and needs assessment on Protection/SGBV e.g., vulnerability assessments, MHPSS, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) sub-sectors.
  • Provide technical support to the AAAR fundraising team when designing new proposals and strategies focusing on protection and nexus programs.
  • Join participatory monitoring visits to project areas to ensure that Protection/SGBV quality standards are being upheld and advice on areas for improvement and capacity building needs.
  • Work with country offices, local partners, relevant agencies, the displaced and host populations to conduct relevant participatory analysis ensuring the voices of survivors are informing programming.
  • Support AAAR engagements at Protection and SGBV on Global/National coordination meetings (Protection Cluster, Sub Working Groups, AAAR global networks), Support AAAR regional safeguarding focal point, ensuring proper implementation of AAAR’s safeguarding policy.
  • Support and join cross federation learning networks and thematic knowledge sharing forums as per relevance

We expect that you have:

  • Extensive experience in providing technical support in the humanitarian sector and in supporting technical teams and local partners.
  • Experience in design and implementation of training focusing on protection and in linkages of humanitarian and development interventions.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the protection sector, preferably working with refugees or internally displaced populations; of which at least 3 years in the sector of protection, more specifically in child protection, or mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), or SGBV prevention and response programming.
  • Experience in providing case management and psychosocial support, directly or in a supervisory role of caseworkers.
  • A detailed understanding of humanitarian principles and practices.
  • Sound knowledge of the Nexus approach and how to make adaptive programming
  • Experience in conducting needs assessments (e.g. rapid gender analysis).
  • Experience in supporting the development and implementation of safeguarding policies.
  • Experience with coaching & mentoring
  • A strong knowledge of the MENA region, related to humanitarian issues.
  • University Degree in social work, psychology, counseling, international human rights law, international relations, political science, or related course.
