Context & Mission

Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent humanitarian organization providing medical aid to victims of man-made or natural disasters, epidemics and endemics. Its Operational Centre in Geneva is responsible for medical assistance programmes in 24 countries.

The Philanthropy Unit is one of the seven teams within the Communications & Fundraising Department of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Switzerland. The 18 staff members of the Philanthropy Unit are in charge of relations with foundations, individual major donors, corporations, cantons/municipalities and planned giving. The unit has raised CHF 78m for MSF’s medical humanitarian mission in 2021.

This role is key to ensure that the Philanthropy Advisors are equipped with relevant information allowing them to mobilize long-term support from major donors. The main focus of the role is on prospect research in the German-part of Switzerland. The position holder will work closely with the Philanthropy Support Officer for the French-part of Switzerland on prospect research and system support methodology (mutual back-up).

Scope of Responsibilities

Prospect Research and Due Diligence

  • Conduct prospect research on potential and current major donors (private individuals, foundations, corporates). Base the research on a combination of information from publicly available sources, donors’ database, available financial records and other indicators. The prospect research may use publicly available sources such as newspapers, articles and search engines to identify prospective supporters or qualify existing donors.
  • Ensure that the information stemming from Wealth overlay and other sources informs stewardship of middle and major donors in a view of identifying new major donors from within the data base and stewardship towards increasing their level of giving and becoming major donors.
  • Prospect research on foundations in Switzerland which support humanitarian projects, education and planetary health.
  • Conduct data mining in the CRM and extract and analyze data relevant for prospect research from the database, in cooperation with the MSF FR data analyst, with a view of identifying prospects and targeting stewardship to donors philanthropic interests and giving patterns.
  • Establish donor profiles based on the analysis of accumulated information on philanthropy priorities, capacity, giving propensity and affinity to MSF and our live-saving mission.
  • Conduct Due Diligence to ensure compliance with the MSF’s gift acceptance policy and request Due Diligence report from external providers if necessary.
  • Together with the Head of the Philanthropy Unit and the Team Coordinators, ensure strategic integration of prospect research into the workflows of the unit.
  • Business development: depending on the strategic orientation chosen, initiate first contact with new donors to qualify their interest in 1to1 relationship with MSF.

Philanthropy system support

  • Function as a Key User on Database use of the Philanthropy Unit. Share responsibility for the daily attribution of major gifts to Philanthropy Advisors in the R2F system with second key user. Contribute to other system support tasks.
  • Lead projects aiming at improving work flows and processes and procedures

Your Profile

Education

  • Tertiary degree in social sciences, economics, statistics, business administration or other relevant field

Experience

  • Experience in research and analysis, including data analysis
  • Excellent knowledge of the Swiss(-German) social and economic landscape
  • Experience in relationship management is an asset
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics 365 CRM an asset

Languages

  • German (mother-tongue level) and English
  • Strong knowledge of French is a strong asset

Terms of Employment

  • 90% – 100% (36-40h/week)
  • Open-ended contract
  • Working place : Geneva or Zurich,
  • Ideal start date: October 3rd, 2022
  • Gross annual salary for a 100%: from CHF 84’814.- to CHF 97’650.- (salary commensurate with equivalent experience and internal salary grid)
