Proposal Writer/Translator “German” – Consultancy

Who are we?

Johanniter International Assistance (JIA) is a German International NGO working in the Middle East as well as South East Asia, Latin America, and Africa. As part of its 2022-7 strategy, it is seeking to increase the size and diversity of its institutional funding by building on new and existing relationships with donors, and partnering with local and national NGOs to deliver high-quality assistance in humanitarian, early recovery, and development fields.

In October 2023 JIA submitted a concept note to BMZ under its Transitional Development Assistance (TDA) funding stream. In anticipation of the full project proposal stage, JUH seeks the services of a consultant or consultancy firm to write a full proposal in German. The proposal will be for a multi-year project focusing on building resilience in NW Syria with interventions in agricultural and non-agricultural livelihoods, health, and WASH infrastructure. The project will contain themes of climate change adaptation and a strong focus on gender-specific programming, as well as community conflict sensitivity.

• Most content will require translation only.
• For some sections, the consultant will be required to re-phrase the content within the donor word limit and ensure it responds effectively to the requirements of each section in the donor language.
• Written content will be provided in English by Johanniter & partners staff, who will be available for discussion and/or clarification of aims & intended approach.

Required services:

The proposal writing process will involve:

• Ensuring a thorough understanding of the project rationale & of the BMZ proposal requirements.
• Clarifying ideas with partner or Johanniter staff so that translation is accurate and consistent.
• Translating the full proposal, including all annexes and budget, accurately into German using appropriate stlye and terminology.

Timeline: According to donor feedback, but within February – March 2024.

Expected work days: 5-10 FTE days

Key Deliverables:

• Accurately translated proposal including all annexes (in line with BENGO/BMZ guidelines)

The Proposal Writing Consultant is expected to have the following qualifications & experience:

• Fluency in written English & German (C1 or higher on the CEFR scale) with experience writing business documents in German
• Demonstrable experience in writing successful proposals to institutional donors. Specific experience with German donors including BMZ or GFFO is desirable.
• Familiarity with the context in NW Syria and the wider region.
• Experience working with local and national NGO partners.
• Excellent spoken English
• Arabic Language skills (desirable)
• Experience translating documents for NGOs or Aid agencies. (desirable)
• Specific technical understanding of the WASH, Livelihoods & Health sectors (desirable)

The assignment can be conducted remotely. Applicants based in Gaziantep or Amman may be able to engage in person with Johanniter and/or Partner staff for part of the assignment. However, international travel expenses will not be considered within this request for consultancy services.
