About Safe Passage

We believe every person has the right to be safe; safe to be with their family and safe to rebuild their lives. Our vision is a world where the people who need it have safe passage to a place of safety, family, and justice. We do things differently – championing the rights of refugees and displaced people as they flee persecution, using the law to help them access safe routes to a place of safety. We work alongside refugees to campaign for change and build public support for safe passage for all. To date, over 2,000 individuals have travelled to safety through routes we have opened. We won the 2021 Charity Awards Campaign and Advocacy Prize, and our work has been recognised with awards from Liberty, Sheila McKechnie, as well as chosen as Guardian Christmas ‘Charity of the Year’. In a year when the need for safe passage for refugees has been brought into even sharper focus, you will be joining an organisation at the forefront of advocating for safe routes to protection.

About ELIL

European Lawyers in Lesvos (ELIL) is a charity registered in Germany and Greece that provides free, independent legal assistance to refugees. Our teams of expert asylum lawyers and volunteer lawyers support refugees in navigating the asylum procedure, preparing for their interview and, if relevant, applying to reunite with family members across borders. In doing so, we strive to uphold the rule of law, defend human rights and ensure meaningful access to justice. ELIL is a charity registered in Germany and Greece. It was founded by the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) and the German Bar Association (DAV) in 2016. These organisations represent the bars and law societies of 45 European member, associate and observer countries, and through them more than 1 million European lawyers. ELIL is now also supported by the Conseil national des barreaux (CNB). ELIL was inspired by belief in the fundamental importance of upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights and ensuring meaningful access to legal assistance. Our teams of lawyers have been providing free, independent legal assistance to asylum seekers in Greece since 2016 (Lesvos, Samos, Athens and Thessaloniki).
