Context:

Under the general supervision of the Director, Coordination Office for the Mediterranean, Chief of Mission in Italy and Malta and Representative to the Holy See, and the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the incumbent will provide general cultural mediation services supporting the relocation activities of asylum seekers from Italy to other European countries participating in the scheme.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate communication between IOM staff and relocation beneficiaries in person and over the phone, or other communication means;
  • Provide translation support (from the required language to English/Italian and vice versa, or any other language combination as deemed necessary) during pre-departure information sessions, medical examinations, outreach events, individual counselling, operational assistance, and other activities;
  • Support with unofficial written translation of documents (from the required language to English/Italian and vice versa, or any other language combination as deemed necessary);
  • Escort relocation beneficiaries on air and ground transportation during national and international movements, if require;
  • Remain available to travel from/to sites in the area of the assigned duty station;
  • Undertake duty travel, if required;
  • Submit feedback questionnaires to all beneficiaries and supporting them in their compilation, if needed;
  • Take care of the administrative aspects related to the tasks performed, including preparation of Purchase Requisition Form, Payment Request, Travel Authorization, Travel Expense claims, as well as ensure proper (physical and online) filing of all such documentation;
  • Perform other duties as s/he might be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

High school diploma.

Experience

  • At least 3 years of experience in cultural mediation in the framework of migrants’ assistance;
  • Experience in liaising with different types of stakeholders, at national and local level.

Skills

Knowledge of the procedures related to the asylum application, including the so-called C3 templated used to file asylum-seekers claims;

Psychological understanding in interpersonal communication and sensitiveness in addressing the asylum-seekers’ claims;

Capacity to prevent and mitigate conflicts between the beneficiaries/asylum-seekers and the police officers.
