Light for the World is a global development organisation. We empower people with disabilities and enable eye health services in low-income countries. Over the last three decades we improved health systems, enabled education for all, and amplified the voices of people with disabilities

In Uganda, our country strategy for the year 2021-2025 focuses on eye health, Inclusive economic empowerment, disability inclusion and Inclusive Education.

Currently, Light for the World Uganda implements projects on eye health, inclusive economic empowerment and disability inclusion with a presence in 21 districts. We are in the process of expanding our team in Uganda and looking for a committed person to fill this role and be part of this growth.

Programmes Manager (1 Position)

Based in Kampala, Uganda (40 hours a week)

Role profile:

The Programmes Manager (PM) will be responsible for the effective and efficient execution of ongoing programs, nurture the growth of portfolio in Uganda, as well as providing capacity development related support project teams. He/she ensures compliance with Light for the World’s policies, donor requirements and national laws.

The PM will report to and work under the guidance of the Country Director, and in close coordination with the Manager Disability Inclusion Advisory Unit and implementing partners, Monitoring Evaluation Research Learning and Adaptation teams as well as the Operations and Finance teams.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to the Country Director, the Programmes Manager will be actively involved in direct project management of specific projects and day-to-day implementation of the more complicated and strategic contracts. This includes:

  • Management of four projects on eye health and inclusive economic empowerment, and line manage program related including partnership relations and budget management.
  • Management of project partnerships.
  • Providing coaching and (peer) support to the programs team to contribute to and ensure quality work.
  • Recruit and contribute to the professional development, autonomy and well-being at work of the project officers.
  • Providing strategic and practical support with development of training and resource materials, programme and facilitation guide, e-learning curricula, and a learning strategy.
  • Support the organization change process and improvement of working processes.
  • Ensuring the programmes managed are compliant with all contractual obligations and that internal policies are implemented.
  • Represent Light for the World in relevant forums and areas of jurisdiction and as may be delegated.
  • Ensuring contractual deliverables are of high quality and on time with limited quality assurance required by the Country Director.
  • Ensuring oversight and quality assurance of work plans, ensuring they are up-to-date, comprehensive and logical.
  • Ensuring monthly review of working budgets against expenditure with responsible staff and partners.
  • Coordinating writing of reports, proof reading and editing with limited quality assurance required by the Country Director
  • In collaboration with field teams and the Operations Department, manage procurement of programme equipment and supplies.
  • Identifying gaps and potential issues in project delivery and propose solutions and/or improvements in co-ordination with management
  • Supporting the development of country strategy, direction and theory of change

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in development studies, International Development, Sociology, Social Sciences, Programme Management or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ project management and grant management experience in a similar INGO or recognized NGO role which explicitly involved donor-funded projects.
  • Excellent people skills with experience in collaborating in a diverse and dynamic team
  • Knowledge and experience of disability inclusion and/or working with organizations of persons with disabilities
  • Experience in partnership management, including government liaisons.
  • Proven effectiveness in leading and coaching professionals.
  • Professional intensive experience and hands-on knowledge on broader capacity building, with excellent facilitation skills.
  • Innovative and strategic thinker always ready to adapt and learn.
  • Technology savvy with proficiency in the use of MS Office software packages.
  • High levels of integrity, accountability, and honesty.
  • Commitment to Light for the World’s mandate and values.
