Guardian Jobs

Greater London Authority (GLA)

Our team supports young Londoners through engagement in sport and physical activity, youth social action, and youth-focused volunteering. An exciting vacancy has now come up for a Programme & Policy Officer in the Mayor of London’s Sport & Youth team.

We believe sport has the power to improve young lives far beyond the well-known health benefits. London is a fantastic city to live in, but not everyone has the same access to its opportunities. A whole range of challenges exist for some young people, keeping them from activity that can help them develop important skills, have a voice, receive support, build positive relationships and feel a sense of belonging.

In this role you will lead on sport and physical activity-focused projects and programmes which tackle those challenges for young Londoners who are most in need of support. For more information on the kinds of initiatives you could be responsible for, have a look at our web pages on Sport Unites, the Mayor’s community sport investment programme https://www.london.gov.uk/what-we-do/sports/sport-unites

A key part of this role would be working closely with other policy teams at the Greater London Authority, as well as with sport and non-sport organisations across and beyond London. By sharing and developing best practice together, we aim to achieve the best possible results for young people and the diverse providers and networks that support them.

So Please Tell Us, With Some Specific Examples, How You Would

We welcome applications from people from a range of backgrounds and want to understand how your experience and skills are relevant to this work.

  • Be a capable project manager delivering quality, measurable results through the whole cycle, from idea to delivery to learnings.
  • Show a balance of strategic thinking and attention to detail in co-ordinating work across different programmes. Collaborate meaningfully and proactively with a range of public sector agencies, such as voluntary and community groups, and the youth and private sectors. Make a good business case for our work that understands and balances different agendas and priorities. Apply your knowledge and understanding of the realistic life experiences and challenges facing young Londoners who stand to benefit most from our support. Bring critical thinking, problem-solving, ambition and innovation to your every day at work.
  • Demonstrate your awareness of key policy areas, as well as governance requirements and monitoring and evaluation processes to measure impact. Communicate clearly and convincingly so others see you, and our work, as credible and clear, and engage with us.
