We are in an expansion phase, which has opened up many exciting job opportunities. Do you have experience in working for human rights and democratisation in Latin America? Do you want to use your management skills to contribute to the work of human rights defenders in very complicated settings? Do you want to contribute to the advocacy work of Civil Rights Defenders in Latin America and internationally? Then you might be the one we are looking for.

About the role

As Programme Officer your primary responsibilities will be to manage one or more of the department’s projects, which includes planning, executing, monitoring, and reporting project activities, following agreements with donors and Civil Rights Defenders standards and procedures.

You will also identify, assess, and propose new activities and partnerships relevant for the local and regional context, monitor and analyse the human rights situation where the Latin America department works, as well as contribute to the advocacy work of Civil Rights Defenders.

You will report to the Latin America Department Director in Stockholm.

The role offers great variety, including work tasks such as:

  • Take responsibility for managing one or more of Civil Rights Defenders Latin America Projects;
  • Organise the work related to trainings in human rights, security management and other activities for Civil Rights Defenders’ partners in the region;
  • Manage, evaluate and report on all aspect of the projects to donors;
  • Contribute and take initiatives in the continuous fundraising work of the Latin America department;
  • Contribute with ideas and experiences related to the implementation of other projects within the Latin America department and Civil Rights Defenders in general;
  • Travel frequently (when possible) in the region, and annual trips to the Civil Rights Defenders headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden.

Furthermore, you like to engage in teamwork and contribute constructively, and through clear communication, you ensure that messages are reached and that expectations are clear to all parties involved.

To be suitable for this role you have:

  • Five years of working experience in Latin America with Human rights and/or civil society work in repressive contexts in Latin America, and/or;
  • Legal work within the field of human rights law, as strategic litigation, and/or Project management within journalism and strategic communication, and/or Work within international organisations, as the UN and the OAS;
  • Commendable knowledge of the socio-political context, current developments, civil society sector and human rights situation in the region;
  • Advanced capacity in cooperating with individuals, organisations and state actors in complicated national and international settings;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish;
  • Administrative skills when it comes to project management;
  • Experience in project design and strategic planning.

It is a merit if you have experience in human rights work in authoritarian countries, International human rights mechanisms, different aspects of security work and risk management, public advocacy, organising and conducting and human rights trainings and travelling to sensitive areas.

If you also have a Master’s degree in Law, Political Science, Sociology, International Relations, Communication or similar, we believe you are the one we are looking for.

About the employment

This is a full-time permanent employment with 2 months probationary employment starting in September 2022 or according to agreement.
