Solidaridad East & Central Africa
- INTRODUCTION
- Solidaridad Network is an international solution-oriented civil society organization working through eight regional expertise centers to transform markets to make them more sustainable and inclusive. Solidaridad Eastern and Central Africa, one of the regional centers, is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. We bring together supply chain players and engage them with innovative solutions to improve production, ensuring the transition to a sustainable and inclusive economy that maximizes the benefit for all. We facilitate the strengthening of local capacity in developing countries, support the creation of enabling environments for economies to thrive, and improve market access.
- I. BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECTS
- Tackling Pollution from the Apparel Sector through Engaging SMEs in Water Stewardship Project
- Solidaridad has been implementing the “Tackling Pollution from the Apparel Sector through Engaging SMEs in Water Stewardship” project to foster improved health, livelihoods and environmentally sustainable growth through preferential investment, purchasing, policy and practice for water stewardship throughout Africa ‘s apparel supply chain. The project was funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented jointly by Solidaridad (Ethiopia), Alliance for Water Stewardship/Water Witness International and Aid by Trade Foundation/COP. To achieve this goal, the project focused on an action and learning centered approach that connects local water stewardship practice, impacts and evidence generated in Ethiopia with global drivers and levers for improved action at SME level across the textile and garments sector.
- The expected outcomes of the SDC project were:
- Improved evidence and consensus on priority opportunities for improved water stewardship throughout the apparel value chain.
- Water stewardship innovation and action in the form of improved water performance, pollution control and water security for affected populations through case study interventions in three levels of the Ethiopian apparel value chain.
- Lesson learning, outreach and legacy via changes in sector investment strategies, procurement and purchasing requirements, standards setting and policy incentives that promote and embed water stewardship throughout the apparel value chain.
- Solidaridad and Aid by Trade Foundation (“AbtF”) focused on the cotton component of the project. The project contributed to the reduction and avoidance of water pollution and the proper usage of water resources in Ethiopian cotton farming in collaboration with the international and local partners and government.
- The expected outputs under the cotton component outcomes were:
- Participatory water security scan and stewardship opportunity analysis – cotton.
- Participatory development of water stewardship innovation and action plans – cotton.
- Training and technical assistance to 300 farmers on improved water stewardship rated as valuable by recipients (>50% women, youth or vulnerable people) (Afar and Tigray).
- Lesson learning, outreach and legacy: embedding water stewardship in cotton production.
