Activity Background

The USAID Burma Responsible Investment and Trade Activity is a five-year (2020 – 2025) activity that will work with a broad range of international and domestic private sector firms and civil society actors to promote civilian ownership of the Myanmar economy by increasing the share held by responsible, accountable, and transparent firms. Through the Activity, USAID will increase trade and private sector investment. To attract and sustain investment and trade, the Activity is supporting firms operating in or entering the market in Myanmar to improve corporate governance, business transparency, and competitiveness.

Overview of the Position

DAI seeks a highly organized and capable Private Sector Gender Consultant, with excellent English communication and writing skills to contribute to cross-cutting activities related to gender equality and social inclusion in the workplace for its USAID Responsible Investment and Trade Activity (the Activity). The Activity aims to promote private sector civilian ownership of the Myanmar economy by increasing the share held by responsible, accountable, and transparent firms. It engages international and domestic private sector firms and civil society actors across multiple sectors to facilitate investment, trade, and business partnerships, and to strengthen regional economic integration, and improve business accountability, transparency, and competitiveness in Myanmar.

The Activity empowers women and girls by facilitating an increase in trade opportunities for and investment in companies that are women-owned; inclusive of women on the board and in senior and mid-management; and/or offer products or services that substantially improve the lives of women and girls. The Activity also promotes gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) in the workplace and empowers women leaders in business and civil society. As part of its GESI activities and work with private sector organizations, the Activity plans to contribute a series of original case studies on the business case for the integration of GESI in the workplace. The Activity is also looking to promote the understanding of and benefits of GESI in the workplace through informative workshops for businesses supported by the Activity.

Roles and Responsibilities

This Private Sector Gender Consultant will primarily support the Activity in researching, writing, and delivering GESI case studies and in creating and providing input in the development of GESI workshops delivered to businesses supported by the Activity. Additional activities related to GESI could be added.

  • Conduct background research and interviews to develop three Myanmar case studies and three regional case studies on gender equality and social inclusion.
  • Identify and determine key themes and topics of the case studies that highlight how businesses successfully integrated gender inclusion in some aspects of their workplace.
  • Case studies must be written in a way that is concise, practical, and compelling to the Myanmar private sector audience. It should include easy-to-read infographics and quantitative information on the impact of gender integration on business outcomes to the extent possible.
  • Work closely with the Activity and key stakeholders in aligning objectives and expectations for the case studies.
  • Create and provide input in the development of workshop materials for a 1-hour online GESI workshop on the integration of GESI in the workplace. The GESI workshop will cover information about GESI and its advantages, practical tools that are available for businesses, and based on research and global trends.

Qualifications

  • B.A. or B.S. degree required; A master’s degree in business administration, economics, development, or other related fields preferred.
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience in private sector gender mainstreaming, social inclusion analysis, and social development planning and implementation, including international development experience.
  • Demonstrated work experience in or with the private sector, including with companies, investors, and business service organizations in emerging markets.
  • Experience in research, analyzing and synthesizing data, writing reports, and/or case studies is highly desirable.
  • Experience in Southeast Asia and Myanmar is a plus.
  • Ability to work efficiently and deliver high-quality deliverables within the time allocated.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and writing ability.
  • Experience in Myanmar is a plus.
