This means we are going through one of the biggest retail transformation programmes that the world has ever seen! ‘Future’ is the name for the programme that will see Asda create their new operating model, independent from Walmart. Technology will undoubtedly be one of the most ambitious parts of this work. As a Technical Delivery Manager, you will be instrumental in building the Asda Ecommerce platform from scratch with the use of 3rd parties.

Your Role

As a Principal Engineer in eCommerce you will lead and help structure technology and engineering teams to deliver eCommerce programmes and projects. This role will be key in driving the adoption of modern architecture and trends such as Microservices, Dev Ops and Cloud Native technology platforms. Supporting the Group Technical Delivery manager as a technical lead for local and distributed technology teams, as well as mentoring and coaching more junior members of the engineering teams.

Principal Engineer Roles And Responsibilities

• Work with architecture and engineering teams to define technology strategy and roadmap for the group of products, to develop a secure, stable and performant platform
• Escalation for any technical issues related to the group of products, including liaison with business / vendors as needed
• Accountable for ensuring the technical solution meets the overall platform architecture, including leading on new releases of software to ensure changes/enhancements occur in a controlled, supported and secure manner
• Manage and oversee the work of the engineering teams to develop the eCommerce platform
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technology standard, trends, emerging technologies and software development best practises
• Ensure technology standards and best practice are defined and maintained across eCommerce
• Embed an agile software development methodology
• Ensure scalability and robustness of the platform, identifying and driving continuous improvements through the technical teams
• Direct, coach and inspire the technical teams taking a hands-on approach as necessary e.g. conducting code reviews
• Define and drive the Quality Engineering strategy
• Partner with the Group Technical Delivery managers and Group Product Managers to drive technical vision and influence product roadmap to ensure software solutions are delivering the best possible value and opportunity to the business

Principal Engineer Skills And Experiences

• Agile methodologies, ability to develop solutions quickly and effectively
• Large scale platform transformations
• Collaborative working
• Strong experience leading the development of eCommerce platform solutions using technologies and methodologies such as, Microsoft Azure, including Azure Integration Services, Azure SQL, Cosmos, AKS and other Azure networking components.
• Modern integration patterns and technologies, including API Management, Events and Kafka
• DevOps/Automation (CI/CD) for large scale delivery using Microsoft Azure DevOps, including the integration to a variety of SaaS vendors including Salesforce and BlueYonder.
• Automated test frameworks, including Selenium, Cucumber, BrowserStack
• Experience delivering projects with distributed teams
