Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Under the overall supervision of the Global Migrant Data Analyses Centre (GMDAC) Chief in Berlin and direct supervision of the Senior Knowledge Management Coordinator, and in collaboration with relevant units at GMDAC, and the Global Data Institute (GDI), the Policy Officer (Portal) will be responsible for compiling, describing, editing and providing information on the different issues around migration data. The successful candidate will contribute to several activities, including synthesizing data and information, drafting, editing and updating online knowledge products and related communications materials, participating in conceptualizing data visualizations, organizing and implementing webinars, assisting with presentations, and general support activities.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Draft, edit and/or update migration thematic and regional migration overviews to be displayed on the Migration Data Portal.
  2. Draft, coordinate and publish the monthly Portal Alert with approved updates on migration data in different sections (Did you know section, map, blogs, etc.) to help foster outreach and maintain the Portal Alert archive up to date.
  3. Search, find and recommend additional migration and migration data resources for the Portal.
  4. Closely work with other communcation colleagues like graphic designers and audiovisual communicators to help conceptualize and visualize migration topics and trends and to provide editorial input on infographics and videos.
  5. Provide inputs for the development of concept notes and strategic collaborations for the Portal and proposals for funding, and provide technical and process support for interim and final reporting activities.
  6. Coordinate and supervise interim Portal evaluation and other ongoing monitoring and evaluation activities likes surveys, feedback forms and tracking of progress on deliverable targets.
  7. Provide feedback on web development by contributing input to new layout, structure and design of the online Portal expansion.
  8. Provide technical guidance or answer inquiries from Portal users on migration data.
  9. Assist in planning and implementing webinars for promoting content on the portal.
  10. Coordinate the crisis spotlight pages on the Portal. Research, analyze, and document/highlight relevant migration and displacement data on a regular basis and update the pages accordingly.
  11. Provide administrative, logistical or technical support for liaison activities with partners, including within the Global Data Institute (GDI), IOM Regional and Country Offices (COs).
  12. Perform such any other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Master’s degree in Journalism, Communications, International Relations, Political or Social Sciences or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or
  • University degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • Experience in writing and editing information materials for various target audiences, with experience in communications an asset;
  • Competency and experience in developing public-facing written materials;
  • Experience in liaising with governmental authorities as well as with national and international institutions;
  • Experience and sound understanding of internal and international migration data issues globally and migration data sources and trends.

Skills

  • Ability to communicate data and complex information to different audiences, and experience in journalistic writing for non-technical audiences desirable.
  • Hands-on experience in the field of communications, including web administration and web content management via Drupal, email marketing and social media management.
  • Basic knowledge of graphic design and video production.
  • Basic knowledge of data analysis and visualization.
  • Knowledge of IOM Migration Data Strategy and IOM data resources.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

External applicants for all positions in the Professional category are required to be proficient in English and have at least a working knowledge of one additional UN Language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).

For all applicants, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Fluency in German is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Internationally recruited professional staff are required to be mobile.
