General Medical Council

Policy Officer – 1x permanent, 1x 12 month fixed term, 1x 9month fixed term

Role And Responsibilities

Do you have an interest in contributing to policy development, have excellent communication skills and an ability to develop innovative, evidence-based solutions?

If you’re seeking a rewarding new challenge and can answer ‘Yes’ to the above questions, we want you to apply to join one of our Policy teams at the General Medical Council (GMC) at our Manchester or London office.

The GMC work with doctors, patients, and other stakeholders to support good, safe patient care across the UK. We set the standards doctors and those who train them need to meet, and help them achieve them. If there are concerns these standards may not be met or that public confidence in doctors may be at risk, we can investigate, and take action if needed.

Responsibilities

If your application is successful, you will help shape significant developments in the health and regulatory sectors, alongside exploring how we can support the profession at a time of change and uncertainty. The role responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the development of new policies, presenting research findings and fielding queries on complex policy issues;
  • Working to ensure that our policies and processes are evidence-based and proportionate, to help us support good, safe patient care;
  • Responding to external reviews, inquiries or consultations;
  • Developing policy positions on a diverse range of issues;
  • Contributing to our programme of work on regulatory reform;
  • Providing internal policy input on our professional standards, or answering queries from doctors, patients and members of the public.

Based on the team you join, we’ll expect you to quickly acquire an understanding of our professional standards, or knowledge of the policies developed by your team and how they contribute to the wider work of the organisation. You’ll need the ability to communicate with people at all levels, including senior managers, and participate in policy discussions. You will engage with a wide range of stakeholders so excellent interpersonal skills are a must.

This is a hybrid role between home working and office working, you’ll work 1 day a week in the office, or more if you prefer. We may ask you to attend the office on additional days where necessary, for example team meetings.

How To Apply

If you are interested in applying for this role, please submit a CV and a separate cover letter of 2 pages, which demonstrates your reason for applying and a summary of how you can meet the essential skills listed in the job description, provide examples where possible. Please note, applications submitted without a cover letter will be considered incomplete and not shortlisted. Interviews and assessments will take place on 7 and 8 February 2024.

We will also create a pool of appointable policy officer talent so that we can recruit to future roles quickly to meet the GMC’s policy business needs. If you meet the standard for the appointment, but you are not offered a role in the first instance, you will join the policy officer pool for six months. If further roles become available, if applicable, we may use the appointable pool from this campaign.

Virtual event

We’re holding a Policy Officer recruitment information drop in session on Tuesday 23 January during lunch time at 12:30 – 13:30, virtually via MS teams. Join us for more insights on our Policy Officer roles, advice on how to apply, meet some of the team and learn more about the role and what we’re looking for.
