Renesas Electronics

Renesas are seeking an Intern currently studying Electronics/Electrical Engineering, who has had an interest in (and some exposure to) IC Testing and Validation. This individual would join on an initial six-month internship programme, with a view to progressing onto a permanent job at the end of their study.

Context

Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMIC) are at the heart of many modern consumer electronic devices like mobile phones, wearables, tablets, laptops and other IoT devices. Such PMICs can easily contain tens of DC/DC converters, ADCs, V/I sensing, temperature supervision, and any other features that the customer deems fit for the system being designed.

There are many factors to consider when designing complex PMIC and proper understanding of the whole system solution is essential:

  • What is the PMIC powering
  • What is the load profile of each converter
  • How do the converters interact with each other & the remainder of the PMIC under the system use scenarios
  • How do converters react to sudden load changes
  • How efficient are the converters to provide least strain on the battery
  • What noise levels can the ADC tolerate
  • How accurate is the protection circuitry

The Internship

Validation tasks aim to provide answers to these and more questions and to ensure the PMIC functions as specified in the datasheet for both, in lab validation and in system validation.

The validation will cover the complete performance of the PMIC, both functionally & parametrically. It will be broken into several tasks to ensure all features are fully functional and all parametric performance is within limits as stated in the datasheet. Any bugs found during this time frame will be promptly reported & debugging process will start. Qualitative data collection & reporting is to be provided before the non-flexible deadlines.

If required, support will be provided to other disciplines, such as design, test engineering, etc. Test program to bench correlation will be conducted on select parameters and trimmings.

The Candidate Is Expected To Support The Variety Of Validation Tasks From The List Below While Working Along The Other Team Members And/or Individually

The validation tasks will cover all aspects of the PMIC development flow.

  • Evaluation Plans
  • Python Scripting
  • Hardware Automation
  • Evaluation & data collection
  • Comparison against specification & simulation expectations
  • Debugging
  • Data analysis & Reporting
  • ATE to Bench Correlation
  • Design & customer support

Environment

You will join a multinational team of engineers responsible for validation and development within Custom Mixed Signal division of PMIC Business Unit of Renesas Electronics Corporation. The team provides its expertise and services to multiple teams in Europe, US and Asia.

Your Profile

  • A solid background in electronics and power circuits and very keen interest in research and development.
  • Experience with measurement equipment is a must have.
  • Excellent communicators and have solid presentation skills.
  • Studied electronics with focus on mixed-signal and switching supplies
  • Solid understanding of basic analog components & circuits
  • Studied about semiconductors for Power Management & key performance metrics
  • Laboratory measurements skills (Oscilloscope, DMM, sourcemeter, function generator, etc.)
  • Good analytical & debugging capabilities with R&D mindset
  • Understanding of bench automation
  • Programming/Scripting skills (Python)
  • Printed circuit Board Schematic & Layout design is a plus
  • Readiness to work in a multicultural team
  • Fluent in verbal & written English
