Department

Our dynamic Development Department is responsible for raising over $700 million annually to support the medical mission of the organization. The Planned Giving unit is responsible for securing over $125 million in 2022 from donors who have included MSF in their estate plans. The Planned Giving team at MSF-USA works to inspire Americans to engage with and contribute to MSF-USA through their estate plans. The Planned Giving team is charged with growing our long term planned giving revenue from individual donors through securing gifts from wills, trusts, beneficiary designations, Charitable Gift Annuities, and other estate plans.

Project

Under the leadership of the Associate Director of Planned Giving, the Planned Giving Officer is responsible for working with Planned Giving and prospective donors with the goal of securing long-term deferred gift commitments. The Planned Giving Officer identifies, manages, and develops strategic relationships with committed, lead, and prospective donors. This position requires a candidate with strong communication skills, experience managing a large portfolio of donors, and a keen understanding of strategic donor relationship building. This position also requires a significant number of personal visits and extensive communication by phone, letter, and other methods to build a relationship that motivates the donor to support MSF through their estate plans. The best-suited candidate will also have a strong interest in planned giving, international humanitarian aid, an ability to take initiative, solid database skills, and a facility for working well both independently and as a member of a cohesive team. The Planned Giving Officer also works closely with the Planned Giving Associate and Planned Giving Stewardship & Engagement Manager.

Tasks

Work with the Associate Director of Planned Giving (ADPG) to review donor requests and cultivation plans.

Help create and roll out best-in-class donor experience strategies to fulfill Planned Giving goals, objectives, and secure long-term revenue.

Manages existing Planned Giving donors, re-engages lapsed donors, and initiates new relationships.

Close planned gifts, including outright gifts, life income gifts, bequests, and beneficiary designations.

Engage group of Legacy Society Members and prospects with goal of deepening engagement and creating additional opportunities for support.

Stewards existing members of the Legacy Society to confirm and increase their estate commitment to MSF-USA.

Informs current and potential contributors about MSF programs and needs; solicits individuals to contribute via Planned Giving.

Drafts proposals and correspondence, briefing, and debriefing materials; records and tracks current actions and next steps in database.

Creates and implements cultivation and solicitation plans for planned giving prospects and committed donors using multiple touch points including personal meetings, email, telephone, targeted mailings, invitations to MSF events, donor parties and other stewardship activities.

Act as steward of MSFs image, reputation, and brand in dealings with donors with honesty, diplomacy, and tact.

Works with donors with interest in planned gifts from Mass, Mid-Level and Major Donor audiences.

Conducts follow up from donor meetings and interactions on a timely basis ensuring that information received is entered into the database, donor debrief recorded, and discussed with key team members.

Manages Planned Giving events including, but not limited to, donor recognition lunches, Planned Giving information sessions, receptions, webinars, house parties, in-house presentations, and other related activities.

As part of the Planned Giving team, contributes input in our brainstorming sessions which help inform our yearly Planned Giving annual plan and budget. Track personal donor meeting metrics and expense as compared to plans throughout the year.

Qualifications

Required

  • Five plus years non-profit fundraising experience strongly preferred in Planned Giving.
  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expert interpersonal skills combined with excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices in Planned Giving stewardship and donor communications.
  • Comfort reading legal documents such as wills and trusts. Ease promoting, soliciting, and closing CGAs. Familiarity with laws & ethics around estate planning.
  • Experience working directly with donors via telephone, email, and written communication.
  • Expert level computer literacy including Microsoft Office, Excel, and SharePoint. Knowledge of donor databases NPSP or Salesforce is a plus.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Enthusiastic “all hands-on deck” style team player; able to operate and collaborate across multiple teams and thrive in a fast-paced culture.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with staff at all levels, and ability to represent MSF with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
  • Responsible, pro-active, driven, and able to work independently.
  • A passion for MSF and the work we do.
  • Ability to travel. Valid USA driver’s license required.
  • Experience working in North American philanthropic environment strongly preferred.
  • Commitment to the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Preferred

  • Experience with Non-Profit Success Pack NPSP/ Salesforce.
  • Experience with PG Calc or other CGA software.
  • Analytical thinking and agility in dealing with numbers to synthesize MSF’s work for donors.
  • Project management experience with ability to help track multiple projects with a team.

Expected to work in a hybrid remote work environment with the ability to come into the NYC office a minimum of 2 times a week, as this position is located in the NY headquarters office.
