POSITION SUMMARY:

The HIAS Foundation seeks a Planned Giving Manager (PGM) to provide support for the foundation. Reporting to the Executive Director of the HIAS Foundation, the PGM uses the HIAS Foundation’s systems to drive forward both fundraising and engagement activities. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation of planned giving knowledge and best practices, with a track record of fostering successful relationships with external and internal constituents. Experience in probate administration preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conducts initial review and analysis of legal documentation received to administer current planned gift expectancies through wills, trusts and other deferred giving instruments in which HIAS and the HIAS Foundation is a named beneficiary.
  • Maintains proactive and appropriate communication with fiduciaries and attorneys concerning estate settlement status to help secure the maximum, most cost-effective distributions.
  • Using donor management database, creates a system to proactively manage all open estates and record correspondence to maintain up-to-date records.
  • Makes personal contact with donors and prospects by phone, mail and email; arranges for and supports personal contacts by the Executive Director or others as necessary.
  • Tracks individual donor activities; maintains and updates donors’ gift records in the database; maintains donors’ electronic and paper files.
  • Manages charitable gift annuity programs and partnership with vendor.
  • Liaises with and provides information to external vendors and consultants.
  • Assists with Planned Giving marketing efforts, including website content, webinars and emails.
  • Manages Planned Giving inbox to ensure donor inquiries received are answered promptly and efficiently.
  • Provides support to the HIAS Foundation Legacy Society, including data analytics and donor research, event management, and communication with donors and prospects.
  • Writes condolences, obtains death certificates and provides information to estate representatives.
  • Liaises with HIAS’ Development, Legal and Finance teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree required.
  • 3-5 years of experience in planned gift fundraising required.
  • Experience navigating estate court filings and procedures, and in reviewing and understanding inventories, court accountings and financial statements.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with proven ability to work closely and professionally with a wide range of constituents, including staff, board members, external partners and donors/prospects.
  • Ability to communicate basic planned giving techniques in concept and application.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and strong appetite to work in a developing philanthropic environment with lots of potential.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet concurrent deadlines, organize time and priorities, and to do so in collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong initiative, self-motivation and ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge and confidence in the areas of estate and trust law is preferred.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, to set and adjust priorities, and to work under pressure while maintaining composure.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of estate planning and gift tax laws preferred; ability to examine financial and legal documents.
  • Experience with prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and donor relations required.
  • Strong project planning, critical thinking and problem-solving; self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Ability to set priorities and meet multiple deadlines with minimum supervision.
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to handle multiple tasks, and strong ethics.
  • Must be a notary or willing to become a notary in the State of Maryland.
  • Travel, to include travel to insecure operating environments, may be required.

ABOUT US:

The HIAS Foundation is proud to support HIAS, the world’s oldest refugee agency. Though the organization was formally incorporated as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in 1903, that founding moment represented a continuation of several predecessor organizations that had worked through the 1880s and 1890s to assist Jews fleeing pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe. While those arriving in the United States at that time were refugees, the world did not yet have a legal concept for people who needed safe refuge outside their homelands.

Originally set up by Jews to help fellow Jews for reasons of religious imperative and communal solidarity, HIAS in the 2020s is a multi-continent, multi-pronged humanitarian aid and advocacy organization with thousands of employees dedicated to helping forcibly displaced persons around the world in keeping with the organization’s Jewish ethical roots.

In 2023, HIAS established the HIAS Foundation to manage and steward a permanent endowment, intended to provide support to HIAS in perpetuity.

By building an endowment through planned gifts, the HIAS Foundation furthers HIAS’ mission. Every year, income from the HIAS Foundation’s endowments will be made available to HIAS to help refugees and asylum seekers around the world realize their rights and rebuild their lives in safety and freedom.

While donations to HIAS are put to immediate use, gifts made to the HIAS Foundation are invested for the future.
