BACKGROUND:

African Parks is a non-profit conservation organization that takes on the complete responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of national parks in partnership with governments and local communities. We currently manage 22 national parks and protected areas in 12 countries covering over 20 million hectares in: Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The organization was founded in 2000 in response to the dramatic decline of protected areas due to poor management and lack of funding. African Parks utilizes a clear business approach to conserving Africa’s wildlife and remaining wild areas, securing vast landscapes and carrying out the necessary activities needed to protect the parks and their wildlife. African Parks maintains a strong focus on economic development and poverty alleviation of surrounding communities to ensure that each park is ecologically, socially, and financially sustainable in the long-term. Our goal is to manage 30 parks by 2030, the geographic spread of protected areas and representation of different ecoregions makes this the largest and most ecologically diverse portfolio of parks under management by any one NGO on the continent.
JOB OVERVIEW:
The Siniaka-Minia pilot will fly and manage aviation in Siniaka-Minia, reporting to its Field Operations Manager with technical supervision from the GZE Aviation
Supervisor and Regional Chief Pilot. The pilot will do some reporting as well, pertaining to flying and to the business analytics of Siniaka-Minia as a protected area.
KEY FUNCTIONS:
Aviation

  • Pilot the Siniaka-Minia Cessna 182 for logistics, surveillance and research;
    • Conduct logistics flights to Zakouma and N’Djamena from Siniaka Minia, and other parts of Chad as needed
    • Conduct regular surveillance flights and report any illegal activities, e.g. agricultural encroachment, illegal fishing or grazing, poaching, etc.
    • Conduct any necessary flights pertaining to ecological research
  • Relieve other GZE pilots as necessary, ready to fly the other aircraft (Savannah, Cessna 206) when the Cessna 182 is unavailable in Siniaka-Minia;
  • Maintain and manage the Cessna 182, including licenses, permits, services, fuel and oil management, spares stock, safety and SOPs, etc.;
  • Oversee the maintenance of Siniaka-Minia airstrips as well as supervise the construction of new airstrips;
  • Keep the aircraft clean and tidy at all times, and ready to fly at short notice;
  • Follow Aviation SOPs and assure that Siniaka-Minia maintains a high level of adherence to these SOPs

Reporting

  • Conduct all aviation-related reporting, including production of a monthly report that feeds into a broader GZE monthly report for aviation
  • Compile metrics for Siniaka-Minia for AP Reporter

REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Qualifying Requirements

  • SACAA CPL/IR (valid)
  • Class 1 Medical (valid) * CRM/DG/SEPT (valid)
  • Proficiency Check (valid)
  • Type rated on Cessna 182, Cessna 206 and IPC Savannah
  • 150 hrs on type (recent)
  • 800 hrs Total Time (1000 preferred)
  • No accidents/incidents in last 3 years
  • Comfortable with living and working in remote areas
