Overview of position:

  • Response Med is seeking to provide health professionals to deliver clinical services in UN facilities located in Somalia.
  • Personnel shall deliver primary care & hospital level services, including emergency, surgical, diagnostic, intensive care & general hospital services.
  • Personnel shall provide the services at the UN level 1+ health facility located in the UNSOS camp within the AAIA in Mogadishu & in sector health facilities, as & when required.
  • Additionally, personnel may be to reinforce these AMISOM level 2 hospitals during emergency situations that severely stress facilities.
  • The UN level 1+ health facility is a capability that was established in 2012 with the objective of providing emergency & primary health care for the UN international personnel in Somalia.
  • The facility has since been supporting UNSOS, UNSOM & AMISOM FHQ personnel.
  • Additionally, the facility is available to international personnel from other UN entities, diplomatic missions & UNSOS contracted vendors, on a cost recovery basis.
  • Services may, on occasion, also be extended to the SNA.

Reporting to the Chief Pharmacist, the Pharmacist Techinicain will be responsible for:

  • Dispensing pharmaceauticals.
  • Safe management & security of pharmaceuticals.
  • Stock control & ordering of pharmaceuticals, medical consumables & other health related materiel.
  • Provision of clinical pharmacy advice.
  • Promote safe & prompt provision of anesthesia & participate in patient education & communication, hence improving clinical & surgical outcomes.

The successful candidate will be a team player with the ability to effectively add value to enabling good patient outcomes & shape best clinical & non clinical practice. Key responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Dispense medications & monitor patient health & progress to maximize their response to the medication in the pharmacy of the hospital.
  • Provide expertise about the composition of drugs, including their chemical, biological & physical properties & their manufacture & use in the pharmacy of the hospital.
  • Ensure drug purity & strength & make sure that drugs do not interact in a harmful way in the pharmacy of the hospital.
  • Receive & process patients’ prescription correctly & accurately for both in / outpatients in the pharmacy of the hospital.
  • Give accurate drug information to patients, wards & other user departments in the hospital.
  • Constitute, restructure, prepare & label extemporaneous preparations for in / outpatients in the pharmacy of the hospital.
  • Participate in drug stocking & stock taking drug in the pharmacy of the hospital.
  • Check the expiry dates of pharmacy drugs & ensuring compliance with the short expiry drug policy in the pharmacy of the hospital.
  • Participate in planning for all medicines & other medical material needs of the pharmacy of the hospital.
  • Support the Pharmacist in charge in proper medical warehousing applying the appropriate principles in the pharmacy of the hospital.
  • Dispense medicines to patients & explain to them on how to use, in the pharmacy of the hospital.
  • Document & file drug related information such as prescription as required by the pharmaceutical policies & practices in the hospital.
  • Support the pharmacist in charge in collecting, recording & analyzing data related to drug dispensing use in the pharmacy in the hospital.
  • Ensure cleanliness, orderliness & tidiness of the pharmacy of the hospital.

Project reporting:

  • This role reports to the Chief Pharmacist.

Key competencies:

  • Training as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Assistant of not less than 12 months duration leading to the award of a Certificate or Diploma.
  • A minimum of two years post qualification experience.
  • Currently registered & licensed to practice in own country or another UN member state.
  • English proficiency, a minimum of level B 2 is required.
  • Preference / desire to live & work in Somalila.

Team management:

  • This role does not have any team management responsibility.
