The Role: Activity Instructor
Our activity instructors deliver a wide range of bespoke activity sessions to differing client groups, balancing the need for safety with creating optimal learning outcomes through genuinely challenging and adventurous experiences.
You will provide a positive experience to all YHA customers and contribute both locally and nationally, to the wider strategy, vision, values and mission of YHA in reaching out to young people.
You will deliver best practice in safety by adhering to YHA standards, AALS stipulation/regulations and qualification remit. This extends to all aspects of delivery including the driving of minibuses.
You will be a key point of contact with group leaders to assist them in their role and to develop a mutually supportive relationship to enable leaders to contribute to activity delivery.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Ensuring continuing best practice.
- Achieving the highest standards of both safety and quality.
- Assisting in the control of labour, equipment, transport, and all other aspects of the activity programme delivery.
- Supporting the induction and training of all instructors in delivering activities at YHA Edale and other hostels.
- Conducting recorded supervision of Activity Staff.
- Taking responsibility for a particular area of activity equipment &/or apparatus to ensure it’s readiness & safety.
What Skills And Experience We Value
The role of permanent activity instructor is a fantastic opportunity for someone who has experience of delivering outdoor activities to all client groups, in a residential setting.
The Permanent Activity Instructor – will ideally hold at least 3 of the 4 qualifications below and be able to drive a minibus and tow a trailer.
Rock Climbing Instructor, Paddle sport Leader or equivalent, Level 1 Local Cave Leader (Derbyshire region), Mountain Leader or Hill & Moorland Leader.
Other Essential Skills And Experience Include
- Relevant and in date First Aid Qualification.
- Full driving license held for min. two years.
- Technical knowledge of activity safety equipment to enable appropriate purchasing, inspection, repairs, and maintenance.
- Ability to motivate and inspire others.
- Experience of working directly with teams of young people (either in voluntary or paid capacity).
- Decision making skills and the ability to stay calm in difficult, even dangerous, situations.
- Strong, clear communication skills and the ability to establish a rapport with a wide range of people.
- Strong planning and organisational skills.
- Excellent customer service skills, including rapport and empathy with young people.
It is not essential but would be advantageous for candidates to have registration and training in further relevant NGB qualifications.
