Background

The International Potato Center Potato (CIP) is seeking to recruit a Nutritionist Consultant expected to support the activities of the Improving livelihoods of farmers in the Cyclone Idai-affected areas of Sofala & Manica provinces through the re-introduction of resilient, nutritious sweetpotato USAID/BHA-Project in Mozambique. Overall, the nutritionist will provide technical support for the implementation of the project’s nutrition, food processing and conservation activities to improve food security and nutrition and incomes of smallholder farming families in the project target areas.

Objectives

The aim of the project is to improve food security and diets of 40,000 affected households in Sofala and Manica provinces through the re-introduction of improved clean planting material sourced from CIP/IIAM, to replace the current mixed, degraded, and lower quality sweetpotato germplasm that have been disseminated in the Idai cyclone-affected areas since the cyclone.

The consultancy falls under the objective 3, where the project has the mandate to provide and facilitate the improvement of nutrition knowledge in the targeted areas. This work is part of the nutrition education training aimed at the main stakeholders and principal advocates at the district level. The focus of the training will be on practical training to the nutrition professionals, journalists, community health agents or polyvalent health agents (APE) and local women groups. Most of these participants are trainer of trainers that will cascade and locally reproduce the knowledge shared during these trainings.

Deliverables

  • Review and prepare training materials
  • Two weeks training on the nutrition package with emphasis on the 1000 days for APE and community health volunteers
  • Two weeks training on the nutrition package with emphasis on the 1000 days for women groups
  • Do a reporting on the main lessons in preparation for any upcoming project
  • Prepare training reports for Manica and Sofala Provinces

Selection criteria

The consultant shall have the following competencies, skills and experience and/or shall have successfully demonstrated these attributes:

  • Master’s degree in nutrition or Food Technologist with significant nutrition programming experience. Experience related to community-based nutrition activities is required.
  • Strong experience of at least 8 years as a nutritionist, managing or supporting community-based nutrition projects.
  • Experience related to agricultural-nutrition pathway and market linkages.
  • Direct experience working on large USAID-funded interventions particularly in emergency relief projects in Manica and Sofala will be an added advantage.
  • Proven experience and understanding of data requirements for nutrition and agriculture interventions.
  • Demonstrated awareness and responsiveness to local context.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and experience in social and behavior change communication.
  • Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills in Portuguese and English. Knowledgeable and familiarity with local languages such as Sena/Ndau, is an added advantage.

Time frame

  • This consultancy contract is for 35 working days to be executed between August 5th to September 20th, 2022.
  • The payment is a fixed and consolidated fee.

This is a national consultancy position limited to Mozambique nationals and permits residents only.
