  1. About CRS

Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. CRS works to save, protect, and transform lives in need in more than 100 countries, without regard to race, religion or nationality. CRS’ relief and development work is accomplished through programs of emergency response, HIV, health, agriculture, education, microfinance and peacebuilding.

As an organization that celebrates and promotes diversity and inclusion, and which is committed to the ongoing work of racial equity and anti-racism, we welcome applicants of all backgrounds. CRS strongly encourages students from HSIs (Hispanic-Serving Institutions) and HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) as well as all students who identify as Latinx and/or BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) to apply.

Lastly, we welcome as a part of our staff and as partners people of all faiths and secular traditions who share our values and our commitment to serving those in need.

  1. Background

CRS’ markets programming is committed to a triple bottom line that prioritizes people, the planet and profit. We prioritize people by supporting agro-enterprises to generate local employment, mitigate risk and decrease barriers to entry. We work with smallholder farmers to strengthen their economic viability and promote inclusive value chains that are profitable for everyone involved by linking them to equitable markets. CRS helps farmers build relationships with traders, processors, exporters and lead firms, so farmer organizations are competitive businesses within value chains.

To support CRS’ value chain programming, CRS produced the Value chain tool kit in 2019. The toolkit provides methods to support staff to design and implement value chain projects that male and female farmers can equitably and effectively engage and benefit. Although the toolkit includes a nutrition factor in selecting value chains to support within a specific geographical location, there is a need to include a chapter to specifically support staff with designing nutrition-sensitive value chain. The consultant will draft one chapter on nutrition-sensitive value chains to be included in the toolkit as well as provide suggested revisions to better incorporate nutrition within the existing toolkit.
