About the Job

The Nutrition in Detention Field Officer contributes to planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of nutrition activities in places of detention in the delegation’s Area of Responsibility ( Garowe, Mandhera, Hargeisa and other priority places of Detention) and provides support to the protection team in achieving the nutrition in detention related objectives in line with the Delegation’s strategy.

This is a resident/national position based in Garowe, Somalia.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports the Nutritionist delegate in the analysis, definition, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the nutrition in detention program
  • Liaises and builds networks with the relevant authorities and other actors involved in food and nutrition in places of detention in order to facilitate communication and on coordination of activities that are aimed at ensuring more efficient access to food in detention
  • Participates in the organization of nutrition in detention round tables with detaining authorities in priority areas to ensure that measures to improve food chain as well as the nutritional status of detainees are implemented
  • Participates in the monitoring of stocks and consumption of food and non-food items on a monthly basis
  • Contributes in the assessment, analysis and monitoring of the food chain in places of detentions food supply/production, food storage, food transformation/preparation, food distribution and food consumption
  • Supports in the implementation of procedures and tools for an adequate food and nutrition system in different places of detention
  • Supports in the implementation of tools and guidance for an adequate nutritional programme in places of detention, maintaining Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) treatment protocols, programme registers and nutritional items stock register
  • Trains staff (storekeepers and kitchen staff) in management of the food chain (food stock control, storage of food items, calculation of standard rations, and promotion of hygiene practices)
  • Trains staff (health staff and the nutrition focal person in detention) in nutritional surveillance and management of malnutrition (identification and treatment of MAM detainees, weekly follow-up and monthly statistics)
  • Participates in the collection and compilation of MAM nutrition program data and indicators
  • Contributes to the planning and organization of quarterly or biannual nutrition surveys in places of detention including data collection, data entry, analysis and reporting
  • Prepares reports on food chain assessment and nutrition programs by places of detention

Minimum qualifications and required competencies

  • Bachelor`s Degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Nursing or equivalent qualification in a related field of study
  • 5 years’ work experience in a similar field
  • Ability to design and implement SMART Nutrition Survey
  • Strong facilitation, presentation and report writing skills
  • Good knowledge of the political, social, economic and cultural environment of the region
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent command of Somali and English language
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel extensively in Somalia
