Job Title: Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Specialist

Reports to: Chief Nursing Officer

Background

Village Health Works (VHW) is a joint American-Burundian NGO based in Kigutu, Bururi Province whose mission is to provide quality, compassionate health care in a dignified environment while treating the root causes of illness, poverty, violence, and neglect in collaboration with those we serve. VHW’s approach integrates clinical services with education, food security, economic development, environmental protection, music and the arts.

Currently VHW operates a comprehensive health clinic with a 60-bed inpatient hospital, which provides prenatal care, family planning, and performs uncomplicated obstetrical deliveries. These services are administered by our staff of generalist physicians under the supervision of our Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer.

Village Health Works has embarked on an ambitious project to build a state of the art 150-Bed Hospital with 4 operating rooms that will be a foundation for educational, training and research programs. The facility will provide comprehensive medical care focusing on establishing surgical and obstetrical services in the region and developing the capacity to provide specialty clinical services not available in Burundi. Projected clinical opening for this facility is early 2023.

Integral to the success of this project is the high-quality functioning of our Nursing professional development specialist whose services allow us to provide quality Nursing care and continues learning and research in the nursing department. Position overview

The NPD Specialist has expertise in multiple practice roles including learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion for scientific inquiry, and partner for practice transition. The NPD Specialist will support the organization in the provision of quality patient care by helping to ensure the clinical competence of nursing staff and foster delivery of evidence-based nursing practice.

Primary Responsibilities

• Collaborate with department and team leaders to identify the organization’s staffing and educational needs with the capability to track trends for future learning needs and opportunities.

• Mentor and provide ongoing evaluation of staff performance.

•Lead nursing on boarding -Orients, mentors, educates, and develops new graduate, novice, and experienced nursing staff to ensure knowledge integration, skills obtainment, and competency development to be able to deliver high-quality nursing care throughout the system.

• Assists in the development and design of training materials; coordinates training sessions and assists in the presentation of in-house education or hire external experts.

•Work with learners one-on-one to help them plan their nursing professional development

• Promotes the generation and dissemination of new knowledge and the use of evidence to advance nursing practice, guide clinical practice, and improve patient care.

• Keep up to date on MOH regulations and requirements for nursing continuing education and professional development

• Documents and keep records of professional development

• Manage nursing professional development budgets

• Contributes to quality and safety initiatives across the organization to consistently apply process improvement techniques to improve care delivery practices.

• Serve on committees (e.g., IPC, Hospital Quality) as assigned based upon expertise and organizational needs.

• Experience in helping nurses connect what they learn to their work

Requirements

* BSN Degree from an accredited school of nursing.

* Licensed Registered Nurse

* Five years progressive experience in ALL clinical nursing in high quality hospital and designated specialty with ability to work across multiple clinical service lines.

* Experience with teaching, mentoring, and coaching nursing staff, especially new graduate, and novice nurses.

*Strong verbal and written communication skills.

*Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to display a caring demeanor toward others.

* Proficient computer skills required.
