Nurse Outreach Support Team (m/f/x)

CONTEXT

MSF’s mission in Belgium aims to address, through a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach, the health needs and key social determinants of the most vulnerable segments of the population, including migrants in transit, undocumented migrants and unaccompanied minors, while proactively engaging in assessing main difficulties and promoting institutional change.

The ongoing projects in Belgium include:

  • Active participation in the Humanitarian Hub, where several organisations provide a wide range of services to vulnerable populations. In this structure, mental health care (first line) is provided by Médecins Sans Frontières. A second line service has also been created to provide psychological follow-up and respond to identified needs.
  • Shelter and psychosocial support for 80 unaccompanied minors.
  • Outreach Support Team (OST): Outreach activity initially designed to support the response to COVID-19 in Brussels among the most vulnerable populations. The mobile team intervenes in non-accredited structures (such as squats) in terms of awareness-raising, prevention and control of infections, health promotion and referral to psycho-social-medical care.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Medical focal point role for the team concerning the homeless network in Brussels, link with these partners and share information on this network with the team;
  • Medical referral point for the most vulnerable populations; being migrants (in transit), people in regular and irregular situations living in squats;
  • You inform the beneficiaries of the existing service offer on their territory, in adequacy with their request;
  • Focal point for medical requests for the target group, answer their medical questions, and refer them to the appropriate people and services for non-medical and medical issues. It implies a lot of communication and follow-up with medical and non-medical actors on daily basis;
  • Leading and organizing small medical consultations in the area of intervention;
  • You establish a relationship of trust with the beneficiaries with the help of the means available;
  • Given your front-line role, you will ensure that any problems encountered are reported to your superiors and/or specialised external services;
  • Regular reporting, informing and collaborating with your line manager and technical referent (Medco);
  • Know, promote, implement and follow up the MSF protocols, hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment. Respect medical confidentiality at all times;
  • Organize and carry out care treatments according to medical prescriptions;
  • If necessary, you will carry out nursing procedures such as PCR tests, first aid for wounds, etc;
  • Monitoring of the epidemic evolution and regular update of the team in collaboration with the medical coordinator;
  • Share information on a regular basis with colleagues and partners about certain needs and situations that arise;
  • Regular participation in various working groups on the problems encountered in the sector. Sharing expertise with partners and representing OST’s activities to partners;
  • Participate in the elaboration of the project strategy together with the team leader and the team;
  • Ensure data collection and monthly reporting;
  • Contribute to the capitalization report of the project.

REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Essential: bachelor’s in Science of Nursing
  • Essential: recognized nurse diploma in Belgium

Experience:

  • Desirable: 2 years of experience and previous experience in other NGO’s, working in multidisciplinary team

Competencies:

  • You have a real interest and knowledge in the problems of the homeless sector, affinity with vulnerable populations living in squats and are sensitive to the issue of immigration
  • You have a good knowledge of the different partners of the homeless sector in Brussels
  • You are an active listener, empathetic, open to discussion and collaboration
  • You are able to manage conflicts and the stress they can generate
  • You have good planning and organizational skills according to the responsibilities entrusted to you
  • You are solution-oriented
  • You work independently while respecting the imposed framework

Languages:

  • Essential:English and French
  • Other languages (especially Arabic) are an asset

CONDITIONS

  • Expected starting date: ASAP
  • Location: Brussels
  • Contract type: Fixed-term contract
  • Contract duration: 5-6 months (until the 31/12/2022), extension possible
