Location: Erbil (Kurdish Region of Iraq – KRI) for travel once a month to North East Syria (NES)/Rojava with Novact assistance.

NOVACT (www.novact.org) is an independent non-profit association with headquarters in Barcelona and offices in Madrid, Caceres, Ramallah (Palestine), Tunis (Tunisia), Saharawi refugee camps in Tindouf (Algeria) and Amman (Jordan). Our goal is to promote nonviolent actions for social transformation towards the defence of human rights, human security and social justice. The organization’s international cooperation projects in the Maghreb, Mashreq, Eastern Europe and Caucasus regions are combined with political-social advocacy strategies in Catalonia, Spain and the rest of Europe.

ABOUT THE POSITION

General Objective

The person should coordinate the current projects related to the field of peacebuilding, development cooperation and humanitarian aid in NES/KRI. As well as being the responsible person and representative of the office and work for KRI and North East Syria/Rojava that he/she will contribute to creating.

Duties and Responsibilities

Manage, follow up and justify cooperation projects ensuring their implementation and coherence with the strategic plan of the organization:

Planning

  • Identify and monitor risk situations for project execution and implementation activities and recommend corrective actions as appropriate;
  • Coordinate and monitor deliverables promptly.
  • Define and review the project work plan and financial plan by NOVACT and donor requirements.

Ensure its execution

  • Coordinate project activities and effective communication with stakeholders to facilitate project implementation;
  • Oversee the implementation of all activities and tasks by the corresponding work plan and budget.
  • Organize and conduct field visits;
  • Organize and facilitate meetings and workshops with stakeholders as required.

Justification, evaluation and contribution to the capitalization of project experiences as well as dissemination of good practices.

Project Budget Management:

  • Oversee project budget management and ensure budget execution in accordance with approved work plans in coordination with NOVACT administrative and financial teams;
  • Prepare and ensure timely submission of quarterly consolidated financial reports, quarterly consolidated progress reports and any other reports that may be required by NOVACT or donors.

Formulation and Strategy:

  • Identify and formulate both development and humanitarian aid cooperation projects in KRI/NES/Rojava, KRI and all of Iraq (international and national donors), in coordination with the Mashreq area coordinator.
  • Participate in the preparation of annual activity plans and periodic reports for the Middle East zone.
  • Participate in the preparation of the organization’s North East Syria/KRI/Syria/Iraq strategy and contribute to its implementation.

Partner Support and Institutional Representation:

  • Technical accompanying to partners.
  • Participate in coordination and collaboration mechanisms between different actors in the field.
  • Institutional representation to donors, local and international organizations, civil society headquarters and other relevant actors.

Office and Novact for KRI and North East Syria/Rojava:

  • Contribute to the implementation of the new NOVACT office in the area.
  • Contribute to the technical management and daily coordination of the office (accounting, logistics and planning) in coordination with NOVACT finance and administration responsible persons.
  • Manage legal administrative issues with NES and KRI administrations related to visas, entity registration and others as needed.

Communication

  • Support advocacy and communication work and contribute to the development of a communication and advocacy strategy from the field.

ABOUT YOU

You are a person of integrity with strong personal values, aligned with our mission and especially committed to nonviolent principles such as transformative strategies, human rights advocacy and global justice.

It is necessary to demonstrate

  • Advanced studies preferably in Social Sciences, Law, Political Science, International Relations, Communications or Journalism.
  • Demonstrable training/experience in Cooperation and preferably in peacebuilding.
  • At least 3 years of work experience managing international cooperation projects, preferably in the field of Human Rights and Peace Building financed by the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation, the European Union, AECID, the United Nations or the City Council of Barcelona.
  • At least 2 years of experience working in the region and/or knowledge of the region.
  • Availability to travel sporadically to other parts of the region.
  • Knowledge of office automation and other related software.
  • Fluent oral and written knowledge and expression in English and Spanish.
  • Proactive attitude, flexibility and adaptability to changes.
  • Ability to solve problems and work as part of a team.

It will be an asset

  • Knowledge and/or studies in Human Rights, as well as in peace building.
  • At least 2 years of experience working in the region and knowledge of the region.
  • Experience in research and advocacy in the field of peacebuilding.
  • Knowledge of other languages (Catalan, Arabic or Kurdish).
  • Internet and social media skills.
  • Class B driving license.
  • Participation in social movements.
