Scope of Work:

In August 2022, the IRC in New Jersey will host a three-week summer program focusing on English as a Second Language (ESL) enrichment for refugee youth living in Hudson and Union County, NJ. The Refugee Youth Summer Academy (RYSA) will serve up to 130 students ages 5 – 20, in eight classes, from at least 10 countries who will participate in academic, creative arts, and recreational activities. Field trips will be held once per week.

The Education Specialist will work closely with the Youth Program Coordinator to design ESL and Social Emotional Asset Development (SEAD) curriculum. The Educational Specialist will draw existing knowledge, research and IRC provided tools and curriculum (Safe Healing and Learning Spaces) to produce meaningful instructional tools and guidance for Lead Teachers. The Education Specialist will facilitate staff and volunteer training in strategies for engaging with limited-English youth as well as the implementation of SEAD curriculum. The Education Specialist will generally oversee RYSA academic instruction as the supervisor of all Lead Teachers. The Education Specialist will also lead the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) of RYSA by developing methods for data collection, evaluation tools and analysis of findings. The Education Specialist will produce a RYSA 2022 Report following the conclusion of the program.

Anticipated Position Term: June 1 – September 2, 2022

Anticipated Hours: IRC anticipates the Education Specialist will work approximately 20 hours per week in May and June, then full-time in July and August, though this is subject to change.

Major Responsibilities:

Prior to summer program

  • Develop thematic and curriculum framework for ESL teachers
  • Assist in developing class schedules with age-appropriate activities in each of four classes, including field trips
  • Assist in development of appropriate assessment tools to measure program effectiveness
  • Assist with design of communication and outreach, including orientation for families
  • Participate in RYSA staff and volunteer screening and interviews

Training week

  • Collaborate with teachers and external facilitators to ensure all activities effectively engage students and work towards promoting English language learning
  • Assist in planning and co-facilitating training for teachers, volunteers, and other staff during training week, including parts of IRC’s Safe Healing and Learning Spaces model

During summer program

  • Ensure classroom environment is welcoming, nurturing and supportive to refugee students
  • Provide ongoing support and instruction to lead teachers and program volunteers; serve as their primary point of contact when summer program is in operation
  • Facilitate weekly check-ins with teaching staff
  • Facilitate daily staff meetings during RYSA
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide feedback on instruction
  • Collect and review weekly lesson plans and offer feedback to teachers
  • Coordinate data collection for monitoring and evaluation
  • Act as a positive role model for students and staff

Post-program follow up

  • Assist with analysis of student assessment data to measure program effectiveness
  • Prepare a report with data and analysis
  • Ensure program site is left clean and orderly
  • Send appropriate thank you correspondence to all volunteers and donors
  • Coordinate instructional staff exit procedures

Other Responsibilities

Position directly supervises: **Lead Teachers, Teacher Assistants, and Peer Mentors

Indirect Reporting: Resettlement Director

Internal: Lead Teachers, Operations Specialist, Peer Mentors and Activity Facilitators

External: Staff at RYSA Location

Requirements:

Education: Master’s degree in Education, TESOL/ELL certification highly recommended

Work Experience:

· At least 5 years’ experience working with English language learners, particularly those with interrupted formal education and those impacted by war trauma

· At least 3 years’ experience supervising in an educational setting

· Experience working with youth and/or refugee/immigrant populations

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

· Strong interpersonal, and communication (verbal and written) skills

· Cross-cultural or overseas experience

· Fluent in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Word

· Ability to take initiative and problem-solve effectively in high stress situations

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Language Skills: Second language proficiency in relevant language desirable (including Spanish, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Arabic).

Working Environment*:*

· Monday-Friday, the program will be held on-site at Kean University in Union, NJ

· Necessary travel to field trips on Fridays
