News and Features Editor

JOB PURPOSE:

The News and Features Editor is a key role which will oversee and produce a range of daily news and feature outputs and op-eds covering global human rights issues to support AI’s media work and ensure consistent quality of current news and feature content for external media, Amnesty.org and other platforms. It will provide sub-editing support and guidance on the development of press releases and other media materials in order to ensure that all outputs conform to house style and are of consistent high quality. It will also lead on the development and implementation of feature ideas on priority projects in order to ensure that Amnesty International receives maximum impact in the wider media and that quality media work is delivered across a range of channels. It will also facilitate and support selected areas of AI’s campaigns and thematic media work (working alongside the regional and campaign media managers – at the IS and in the Regional Offices).

This role is part of a busy global team dedicated to driving awareness of human rights in print, broadcast and digital media to help bring about change that impacts people’s lives.

ABOUT YOU:

You have a background in journalism or public relations in an international setting, an outstanding sense of the global media landscape, including digital media, a passion for human rights and a strong network of media contacts. You are an intelligent communicator who can deliver engaging content on complex issues to tight deadlines.

You are experienced in the media industry and know how to deliver and implement a creative communications strategy. You also have a strong news sense and know how to place a story to achieve maximum impact, providing prompt and impactful media response to world events.

And of course, you are committed to working in human rights and specifically to delivering the aims of Amnesty International.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create and edit a range of Amnesty International news and feature content (factual, analytical and opinion pieces), for external media and dissemination through digital platforms working with Audio Visual, design and digital engagement teams in order to communicate Amnesty International’s news offer to key audiences.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Extensive, recent and relevant experience of working in a daily news environment;
  • Substantial experience of sub-editing and writing clear and concise newsworthy media materials targeted for international, regional or national media to tight deadlines and high standards;
  • Familiarity with the world news agenda and good news judgment;
  • Proven writing skills; familiarity with the principles of accuracy, objectivity and independence;
