Field-based position with visits to the headquarters in Geneva
Context
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent humanitarian organization providing medical aid to people affected by conflict, disasters and disease outbreaks. MSF Switzerland is the Swiss association of 24 national and regional associations composing the Médecins Sans Frontières global movement, which has helped millions of people since it was established in 1971. Its Operational Centre in Geneva (OCG) is responsible for medical assistance programmes in close to 30 countries.
Description of duties
Analysis
- Provides an analysis and description of the identified contexts, humanitarian aid and stakeholders.
- Produces an analysis on the identified armed groups and the possible changes in the contexts concerned (review of MSF documents, publication of research centers and academics, experts, media and websites concerned, etc.).
- Visit MSF missions and the various actors in the field in order to build an analysis rooted in our operations and intervention contexts.
Networking & engagement
- List all the actors involved in the identified contexts (States and authorities, humanitarian organizations, etc.) and contribute to the development of a network with NGOs, IOs, State and non-State institutions and organizations, researchers and academics and parties to conflicts necessary for monitoring and analysis available to HoMs and desks
- Contributes to the development of an engagement strategy with stakeholders and belligerents
- Actively contributes – in close collaboration with the desk and in intelligence with the HOMs – to the development and implementation of negotiation strategy to guarantee access to vulnerable populations.
Coaching & training
- Provides support to teams for the development and implementation of engagement and negotiation strategies in our intervention.
- Participate in the deployment of specific training for negotiation
Positioning & capitalization
- Participate with the heads of mission / MSF desks in developing messages to authorities and non-state armed groups Participe avec les Chefs de mission/desks MSF à l’élaboration des messages aux autorités et groupes armés non étatique.
- Nurtures and stimulates internal reflection (dissemination of analyzes & case studies, position papers, declaration and positioning of armed groups, etc.) and takes part in MSF presentations and debates.
- Conduct peer review study to capitalize on negotiation strategy and engagement
Your profile
Education
- Tertiary degree
Experience
- At least 5 years of experience in operational positions in humanitarian assistance in developing countries or conflict zones;
- Strong experience in field operations management ;
- Experience with MSF or other NGOs essential.
Languages
- Fluent French and English
Skills
- Ability to analyze humanitarian contexts and its stakeholders
- Ability to translate complex questions into policy options leading to practical recommendations.
- Capacity for coaching and mentoring
- Excellent writing, editing and analytical skills.
- Good presentation skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Capacity to work effectively in a team and to set up and maintain a wide network of expert

Working conditions
- Field-based position with visits to the headquarters in Geneva.
- Fixed-term contract, 24 months
- Practical working conditions in the field are in accordance with the MSF OCG volunteer manual.
- Gross monthly salary: CHF 5,500 for a 100% position (proportional to the occupation rate)
- Ideal start date: September 1st, 2022
- Benefits: Health insurance and living expenses in the countries of intervention and at headquarters, paid according to internal regulations.
