Midwife Advisor

International Confederation of Midwives (ICM)

ICM is currently seeking three Midwife Advisors to join the ICM Head Office team in The Hague, The Netherlands:

  • two full time Midwife Advisors (40 h per week)
  • one half time Midwife Advisor (20 h per week)

We are looking for experienced midwives with recent midwifery practice and specific expertise in one or more of the following areas of midwifery

  • pre-service education
  • regulation
  • research
  • policy
  • midwives’ association strengthening
  • climate/humanitarian issues
  • midwifery practice

Successful applicants will be motivated, competent, self-managing and positive, able to work independently and contribute effectively to a high-performing team. As passionate and committed midwives they will be experienced leaders (formal or informal leadership roles) with broad knowledge and understanding of what is required to establish and sustain an autonomous midwifery profession that is able to improve outcomes for mothers and babies.

Purpose and Scope of Midwife Advisor positions

Midwife Advisors are central to the work of ICM as they are the midwifery technical experts that work with the ICM Head Office. Their role encompasses:

  • Providing midwifery leadership and technical advice (internally and externally);
  • supporting advocacy and communications through ensuring that key messages reflect most recent and robust midwifery evidence;
  • managing development, reviewing and updating of ICM core documents including standards and position statements;
  • representing ICM at various fora to ensure that the views and interests of midwives and ICM are represented; supporting midwife volunteers who may represent ICM from time to time;
  • supporting ICM Board Members with representation and liaising with member associations;
  • contributing midwifery technical expertise to ICM-managed projects or where ICM provides technical expertise through consultancies;
  • liaising with and supporting capacity-building of member associations;
  • supporting the development, dissemination and implementation of ICM’s professional framework at country, regional and global levels, including developing resources and approaches to support implementation; and
  • supporting the strengthening of ICM’s regions and the development of midwifery globally.

Within the midwife advisor team, all midwives will be experienced practitioners and recognised leaders and with additional expertise in one or more areas including for example: midwifery education, regulation, research, practice, policy, humanitarian/climate issues or association capacity-building.

Location

These roles are based in the Netherlands and applicants must be willing to relocate to the Netherlands for an initial two-year period.

The role will involve travel, especially to low and middle-resource settings and successful applicants will need to be prepared to travel for several weeks at a time.
