Context:

Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. IOM implements innovative projects aimed at young people and aspirant migrants through a Communication for Development (C4D) approach. One such project is Migrants as Messengers (MaM), which seeks to empower target audiences in West Africa to make informed decisions about migration through peer-to-peer messaging.

The project started in three countries in November 2017 and was expanded to seven countries in 2019 (Nigeria, Senegal, Guinea, The Gambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, and Liberia). It is carried out by volunteers using storytelling techniques to record and broadcast interviews with returned migrants and share these stories online and at community events.

Under the direct supervision of Migrants as Messengers (MaM) Project Manager at IOM’s Regional Office for West and Central Africa in Dakar, the successful candidate will write a report on the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) study. The study was conducted over two years and included data collection to measure improvement of the wellbeing of the returned migrants who were active Volunteers in the Migrants as Messengers project.

Core Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct a technical desk review to support data analysis findings

  2. Review the data analysis to be able to write the narrative analysis

  3. Draft a report in line with IOM writing guidelines and in collaboration with the project’s Impact Evaluation team. The report should include:

a. Executive summary

b. Introduction

c. Problem statement and hypothesis

d. Methodology

e. Results and Findings

f. Comments and analysis of the results and findings

g. Recommendation

h. Bibliography

  1. Send draft report to members of a review board and address all reviewer comments to finalize the report.

  2. Liaise with IOM’s graphic designer, copy editor, external translator and IOM’s Publication Unit to finalize the content (in English), layout, translation (to French), and publishing of the report in French and English.

  3. Draft a one pager (brief) and presentation of the key findings of the report.

  4. Present final findings of the report to IOM colleagues.

  5. Identify promotion channels for the report (such as identifying conferences, publications, presentations, etc.) where the study can be shared/presented, and pitch and/or place the report in these channels.

Deliverables:

Deliverable 1

· Provide methodological notes (after the first week of the consultancy)

· First draft of the report of MHPSS study including technical desk review

Deliverable 2- Report in English is reviewed and finalized

Due Date 2- End of Month 2 (June)

Deliverable 3– Layout and translation finalized

Final text is shared with graphic designer for final layout of English text, Final text is shared with IOM appointed translator to translate report to French -**22 June**

English designed report is ready for internal review -**4 July**

French translation is final- 6 July

Graphic designer starts layout of French copy- 12 July

French designed report is ready for internal review -**19 July**

French and English reports have been internally reviewed- 27 July

French and English reports are complete and ready -**29 July**

French and English reports are submitted to IOM Publications Unit -**1 August**

Promotional content for the launch of the report has been created and finalized (e.g., video interviews, one pager, presentation) -**31 August**

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Anthropology or a related field from an accredited academic institution.

  • Participation in ‘IOM corporate programmes in Psychosocial Interventions in Emergency and Displacement’ or similar will be considered an asset.

Experience

· Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional work experience in mental health and psychosocial support.

· Proven experience in strategic approaches for mainstreaming mental health and psychosocial support.

  • Excellent report writing skills with proven track-record of producing reports or academic publications linked to the subject area of the project.
  • Experience in research processes and methodology.
  • Expertise and experience in qualitative data collection with vulnerable populations.
  • Expertise and experience in training facilitation.
  • Familiarity with the region is an advantage

Language

Fluency in spoken and written English is required.

Working knowledge in French is also required.
