The MHPSS Technical Advisor for the Ukraine emergency will ensure that all MHPSS activities are in line with international standards and best practices and will develop an effective supervision structures and processes for MHPSS staff. The MHPSS Technical Advisor will also support the MHPSS Senior Advisor to ensure direct supervision and mentoring to professionals working in MAs that will be trained on MHPSS interventions.

Availability and type of contract: 12 months consultancy, renewable

Working Location: Italy with availability to travel frequently across different project locations. Possible travels to Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Latvia, Hungary and Czech Republic as needed.

Targets

SOS Children’s Villages Italy aims to respond to the Ukrainian crisis with a twofold approach. First, it aims to ensure that the needs of Ukrainian refugees who found shelter in Italy are met through tailored assistance. Second, it aims to build the capacity of SOS staff in Italy and in six SOS Member Associations (MAs) including Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Latvia, Hungary and Czech Republic, as well as of charity volunteers and public operators to meet Ukrainian refugees’ Mental Health and Psycho-Social Support (MHPSS) needs.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Capacity building

  • Deliver and support the delivery of Training of Trainers (TOTs)/training of Facilitators (TOFs) on MHPSS interventions.
  • Provide supervision and mentoring to staff trained in MHPSS interventions in Italy and across the different MAs responding to the needs of populations affected by the Ukrainian conflict.
  • Contribute to build the skills of trained personnel in MAs to provide direct supervision to local staff trained in MHPSS interventions.
  • Support a community of practices across the countries to nurture the knowledge and know-how of the MHPSS teams.

Project technical support:

  • Support continuous MHPSS assessment and collect information related to MHPSS situation analysis across project locations, in order to inform project’s adaptations.
  • Conduct ad hoc support visits.
  • Provide targeted psychological support to MAs staff as well as opportunities to enhance staff well-being.

Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Psychology
  • At least 5 years of experience in MHPSS or in a similar role with at least one experience at the international level and minimum 2 years in an emergency response or recovery context
  • Experience in training staff and implementing MHPSS activities such as PFA, DWM, PM+
  • Familiar with all IASC MHPSS guidelines
  • Familiar with humanitarian coordination in emergencies
  • Experience in training and supervising others and in training/mentoring/coaching on the job
  • Flexibility, excellent organizational and improvisational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, in a challenging environment and to handle stress
  • Politically and culturally sensitive, awareness of gender issues, with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
  • Fluency in English; Ukrainian or Russian is an asset
  • Willingness to potentially work in a volatile security environment and to travel to field locations
