About KITs gender work

KIT’s Gender team is an international team of gender specialists that focuses on gender and rights analysis, gender integration, capacity development and research. We work on both stand-alone women’s rights initiatives, and on gender integration and rights within specific domains such as agriculture, financial inclusion, responsible business, and health. Together with partners and clients KIT Gender facilitates and documents critical reflection and gender knowledge development, supports the development of policies and strategies and the monitoring and evaluation of programmes that focus on gender equality and rights outcomes.

KIT Gender is expanding its work on women and girls’ rights, leadership, and empowerment based on feminist approaches and methodologies. We offer capacity building trajectories to management and staff of partner organisation as well as evaluations, institutional development and organisational learning support. Together with women’s rights organisations, NGOs and civil society organisations, we develop gender-transformative approaches to programming, monitoring, evaluation and learning.

About the role

We are currently seeking candidates for the position of Medior Gender Advisor to strengthen our team. As Medior Gender Advisor, you will work with colleagues in the Gender team on a variety of projects. You will mainly contribute to and lead projects offering advisory and applied knowledge services in gender equality, women’s leadership and rights. In particular, the advisor in this position will contribute to expanding and deepening our gender work around one or more of the following thematic areas of expertise: (1) gender-transformative approaches, (2) women’s rights and leadership, and/or (3) monitoring, evaluation and learning on empowerment and gender transformative outcomes. We expect the advisor to contribute to the future strategy of the KIT gender team, lead and contribute to gender team acquisition efforts, contribute to gender training development and delivery, and work with junior, medior and senior colleagues.

Main responsibilities

  • Provide technical advice to support development organisations, research and knowledge institutes and governments in integrating and promoting gender equality and women’s rights.
  • Develop and implement gender capacity building programs (including training, coaching, action learning and other forms of knowledge sharing and knowledge management) at international, regional and national levels.
  • Support and facilitate institutional change, including design and supervision of gender audits and institutional assessments; development of gender strategies and policies, and support their implementation; and monitoring, evaluation and learning of institutional change, gender-transformative change and/or gender integration strategies.
  • Design, implement and disseminate applied qualitative and/or quantitative research on gender equality, empowerment and women’s rights.
  • Liaise with donors and partners to mobilize resources and acquire projects to realise the knowledge ambitions of the gender team.
  • Contribute to gender team learning and knowledge development.
  • Contribute to strategic positioning of KIT’s gender work, nationally and internationally.
  • Support quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
  • Collaborate with gender team colleagues in further expanding work in the areas of rights, empowerment and leadership.
  • Contribute to knowledge dissemination through online platforms, and publications.

Job requirements

  • Academic qualification (minimum of Master degree) in social sciences, for example anthropology, human geography, political sciences, development studies – preferably with a strong and focused specialisation in gender studies.
  • Minimum 7 years of work experience in gender and international development in applied research positions, capacity strengthening programmes, advisory work, for example with government and non-government institutions.
  • Strong expertise in the gender dimensions of development, particularly in gender equality, women and girls’ empowerment, social justice, human rights and transformative change
  • Demonstrated experience in the coordination, planning and logistics of gender capacity strengthening and/or similar types of activities.
  • Demonstrated experience with social science research methods, in particular quantitative data analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience working using feminist approaches, activism and/or with feminist movements.
  • Demonstrated experience with online facilitation and the use of online tools for data collection, applied research and/or monitoring, evaluation and learning.
  • Be able to work independently in performing tasks in a project team, and writing analytical reports and knowledge products.
  • Experience in acquiring and leading large projects/programmes is an advantage.
  • Team player with excellent listening and problem solving skills and the capacity to work within a diverse multicultural team and maintain good working relations with global partners.
  • Experience writing research reports and producing knowledge products is an asset.
  • Long-term working experience in LMIC countries is an advantage.
  • A PhD is an advantage.
  • Ability to work in French, Portuguese and/or Arabic is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience in Francophone Africa or in the MENA region is an additional advantage.
  • Fluency in English and excellent English writing skills are required.
  • Regular short–term travel is required for this position.

Please note: A focused academic specialisation in gender studies combined with work experience in gender and international development (applied research, capacity strengthening or advisory work) are key requirements for this position. Potential candidates who do not meet these requirements will not be shortlisted and are discouraged from applying.

Additional information

The initial appointment is for one year, 32 to 40 hours/week, subject to renewal. Preferred starting date is September 1, 2022.

We offer

  • The salarywill be in accordance with the KIT salary rates, based on qualifications and experience, with a minimum of €3335 to a maximum of €4999 (gross per month, 40-hour work week). Additional 8% holiday allowance and admission to the KIT pension fund (ABP) and opportunities for training and personal development. Approximately 25 annual vacation days plus 13 ADV days (when working full-time)
