CONTEXT

Nutrition activities, projects and portfolios have increased at MSF-Operational Centre Brussels over the last three years. In addition, global food security in relation to increasingly frequent climate shocks, the Covid-19 pandemic, and war in Ukraine is continuously declining in a time where humanitarian funding is reducing. The resultant impact upon existing nutrition projects as well as increasing the needs for new and unfolding nutrition projects is acknowledged. There is an increasing demand for medical professionals with nutrition experience in these stressed contexts and/or building capacity of existing staff’s knowledge on nutrition programming and in the management of malnutrition.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provide direct technical field support through short- and medium-term field visits to emergency and existing nutrition projects.
  2. Develop implementation strategies that will also enable monitoring and evaluation of nutrition programming during field visits and by the teams themselves.
  3. Contribution to, or delivery of training, capacity building and mentoring in nutrition to staff at all levels.
  4. Contribute towards the development of an emergency preparedness strategy package and assessment for potential nutrition / health interventions.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE FUNCTION

1.Provide direct technical field support through short- and medium-term field visits to emergency and existing nutrition projects

  • Assess the quality of nutrition aspects of care
  • Assure the implementation of nutrition protocols or help implement new strategies always using a horizontal approach (for example link TB and HIV care, EPI, postnatal/newborn follow up, post hospitalization follow-up of children)
  • Reinforce nutrition care in extensive nutrition emergencies

2.Develop implementation strategies that will also enable monitoring and evaluation of nutrition programming during field visits and by the teams themselves

  • Support teams to develop prioritized and phased implementation strategies accounting for context, health and nutrition needs
  • Develop an operational monitoring and evaluation tools package for nutrition interventions complementary to existing monitoring tools
  • Assure good initial implementation/organization of nutrition care in both inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Provide input on technical and strategical discussions on nutrition care and interventions (with the nutrition advisor) and articulate potential next steps with field teams
  • Provide clear written reports of projects visited, and discuss conclusions and recommendations with relevant medical department advisors and the operations department
  • Capitalization of “lessons learned” from different projects and dissemination to medical department, operation and other missions

3.Contribution to or delivery of training, capacity building and mentoring in nutrition to staff at all levels

  • Direct field support by assuring targeted training, capacity building and mentoring of field-based staff
  • Indirect field support by supporting the development of training, dissemination of lessons learned

4.Contribute towards the development of an emergency preparedness (EPREP) implementation strategy package and assessment for potential nutrition / health interventions

  • Contribute towards the development of an EPREP implementation strategy package and field-appropriate assessment tools.

As by definition this post is linked with a direct support of the field, this type of activities will be limited to short periods while in the based-office.

REQUIREMENTS

Professional qualifications:

  • Professional nurse or doctor or dietitian
  • Master’s in Nutrition / Public Health / International Health / Tropical medicine is an asset
  • Training or courses held in nutrition

Professional competences:

  • At least 3 years of clinical experience working as a professional nurse, doctor or dietitian
  • At least 1 year of experience in low-resource health settings and in NGO humanitarian work
  • MSF experience is an asset
  • Experience and skills in teaching, learning and mentoring
  • Experience in the management of malnutrition patients as well as start up or running of nutrition interventions (inpatient & outpatient settings)
  • Experience in hospital- based nutrition in ICU, Surgery, Burns Unit, advanced HIV and TB wards is a strong asset
  • Experience in community health and outreach activities is an asset

Personal qualities

  • Autonomous, diplomatic; dynamic and flexible; a capacity for taking initiative and making decisions; a capacity for analysis and summarizing; ability to prioritize; ease with public speaking, good interpersonal and communication skills; teaching and training skills are an asset
  • Capacity to adapt his/her support to varying field contexts and work as a team
  • Flexibility to carry out field visits in all MSF-relevant contexts

Languages

  • Proficient English C2 & Independent user French B2

CONDITIONS

  • Expected starting date: August 2022
  • Location*: Nairobi (Kenya) or Brussels (Belgium); Mainly carried out in the field
  • 70% of time in the field

  • The contractual terms and conditions will be established according to the place of work , legal constraints and in respect of MSF standard function and salary grids
