POSITION SUMMARY:

The Media Relations Manager will work closely across the organization to create opportunities to raise brand awareness and mission engagement by building strategic opportunities and relationships amongst thought leaders, policymakers and journalists to tell our story. She/he will work to identify stories and opportunities to garner earned media to increase engagement among media, partner, and public audiences. This role will be responsible for monitoring policy around global health and humanitarian crises and creating associated communications for the organization. Must have a strong passion for global health, international humanitarian work with an understanding of advocacy and policy around the sectors. This position will be asked to deploy both domestically and internationally during emergency response.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Relationship building – builds relationships across organization to identify opportunities to garner earned media surrounding our programs around the world.
  • Earned Media – identify and develop end to end media campaigns as it relates to new developments, global health programs and emergency response for the organization.
  • Project Management – manages full scope of media campaigns including working with media agency, journalists, internal spokespeople, traffic management and content marketing teams.
  • Writing & Editing – this person will have a natural tendency to find the story, experienced at writing and editing the storylines and experienced in editing / writing blogs, op eds, press releases and senior leadership memos.
  • List Building & Networking – a primary role for this person will be to reach out to journalists, foster relationships and partner on management of media list and contacts.
  • Story Pitching – Strong experience and success in pitching stories to journalists and garnering media coverage. You know how to re-write the storyline based on journalist angles, have a gut instinct in seeking out stories and who to pitch to and comfortable making calls to pitch out news.
  • Social Media Support – Collaborates with the media team and Social Media Manager to provide social media support toward earned media initiatives. Manages intersection of media outlets and journalists and social media by leveraging social media for media relationship
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field
  • Five+ years’ experience in communications, media, or public relations
  • Must have experience in international affairs with preference in NGO, global health exposure
  • Ability to work well under pressure, and to respond flexibly and resourcefully to workload fluctuations, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills
  • Cultivates positive relationships with various stakeholders, including internal collaborations and outwardly with media, technical experts, and strategic partners
  • Solution-oriented and goal-driven
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and organization; able to handle multiple tasks or projects of high priority in a professional and efficient
  • Demonstrated motivational skills, professional maturity, and the ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

Work environment:

  • Typical office environment with exposure to a minimal noise level.
  • Emergency deployments may be in resource-deprived environments with austere living conditions.
  • Travel for extended periods may be by air and/or other modes of transportation.
  • While international travel is not a regular part of every job, programmatic needs may require it intermittently.
  • Project HOPE employees may be required to travel or work in countries where working conditions are classified as “hardship.”
