POSITION SUMMARY

IREX seeks an individual that will be responsible for leading an assessment of the Sudanese Information Ecosystem and Media Landscape. The individual will conduct research into the role of media in the time of conflict, analyze trends appearing in the media landscape on freedom of expression, polarization, propaganda and misinformation, access to information, and other topics as directed. Additionally, the individual will support media monitoring of Sudanese outlets for coordination with potential partners. Preferred candidates for this role should have experience doing research on media or media related activities in conflict zones, such as Sudan, Candidates should be able to process information quickly and concisely, remain objective while recognizing sensitive cultural differences, provide detailed written research products, and verbally articulate findings in virtual meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities

IREX expects a consulting period of three months, with the following duties:

• In coordination with IREX’s Senior Technical Advisor, lead the remote research of the Sudanese Media Landscape, through quantitative and qualitative research
• Monitoring the media coverage of the program’s potential media partners and coordinate the development of a development plan for the potential partners
• Coordinate remote research efforts with media partners, information, and civil society professionals in Sudan Other duties as assigned.
• Other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Understanding and knowledge of Sudanese operating environment and context preferred
• Extensive in-country contacts with all levels of media, information, and civil society professional preferred
• Professional level fluency in written and spoken Arabic and English, required
• Previous experience conducting analyses and studies of the media or civil society sectors preferred
• Previous experience in conflict sensitivity and GESI sensitivity, and the intersections of the two, preferred
• Previous skills in Media Content Monitoring preferred
• Ability to convene participants and hold interviews virtually
• Familiarity with use of secure communications protocols
• Professional level familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel
• Skills and experience conducting relevant desk research
• Relevant bachelor’s degree in a related field, preferred.
