Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

1. ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT AND SCOPE:

IOM began its operations in Thailand in 1975, assisting the resettlement of Indo-Chinese refugees to countries offering them permanent residence. With the Kingdom of Thailand joining IOM as a member state in 1986, the organization’s cooperation with the Royal Thai Government has expanded to cover all aspects of migration affecting the Kingdom and its neighbors, including labor migration, migration health, counter-trafficking, emergency and post crisis, institution building, border management, security and law enforcement.

Today, IOM has a strong presence in Thailand with over 300 personnel working on more than 50 active projects in eleven locations across the country. The IOM Mission in Thailand has a main office in central Bangkok, four sub offices and six other project offices in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Mae Sariang, Mae Sot and Samut Prakarn.

Under the direct supervision of the Media and Communications Officer, overall supervision of the Chief of Mission, and in close coordination with the Programme Managers, the successful candidate will assist in the implementation of media, communications and awareness raising initiatives.

2. RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Media and Communications

Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Media and

Communications Assistant will:

  • Support the development and implementation of the mission’s public information, communications and visibility strategy.
  • Support the creation of public information content – in particular, audio-visual and multimedia content – on the mission’s key activities and achievements.
  • Interview project beneficiaries and write stories for dissemination in various traditional and digital platforms.
  • Liaise with media practitioners to enhance visibility of the mission’s work and to promote balanced and credible coverage of migration issues.
  • Assist in implementing capacity building initiatives for media stakeholders.
  • Supporting the incorporation of the Communication for Development (C4D) approach into awareness raising initiatives and support the implementation of activities to promote safe migration.
  • Create information, education and communication (IEC) material for use in awareness raising initiatives.
  • Monitor media coverage of the mission’s work and other media developments on migration.
  • Undertake duty travel when necessary, in particular to cover mission activities.
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/expected outputs:

As an active IOM team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to IOM and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including:

  • Production of quality multimedia content, including human interest stories, photos, short videos, posters, etc.
  • Management of a social media plan and schedule
  • Development of information, education and communication materials (IEC) required by various programmes
  • Effective relationship-building and liaison with national media stakeholders
  • Production and dissemination of weekly migration news reports
  • Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment
  • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed

3. REQUIRED QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent in Communications, Journalism, Development Studies, International Relations, Social Sciences or a related field from an accredited academic institution

Experience:

  • One years of experience in Communications, Journalism, Development Studies, International Relations, Social Sciences or a related field from an accredited academic institution;
  • Experience in community engagement, outreach, advocacy or awareness raising initiatives is an asset;
  • Experience working in international, nongovernment or civil society organizations is an asset;
  • Experience liaising with government, civil society and media partners;
  • Experience in digital content creation, including photography, videography, graphic design and editing;

Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  • Skilled in the use of Adobe Creative Cloud, in particular Adobe PremierePro;
  • Well-versed on Thailand’s media landscape;
  • Good grasp of migration dynamics in Thailand is an asset;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.

Language:

  • Fluency in English (oral and written)
