Job Synopsis

The Associate Executive Director of Mennonite Central Committee U.S. is responsible for the overall leadership of the day-to-day operations of the relief, development and peace building work of MCC, the service agency of the Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches in the United States. The Associate Executive Director supervises senior operational and programmatic staff in their efforts to accomplish MCC’s mission, specifically the directors of International Program, National Peace and Justice Ministries, Human Resources, Administrative Services, Financial Services, and IT. The Associate Director works closely with the Leadership Team of Organizational Development, Communications and Donor Relations, and the Executive Director. The Associate Executive Director serves as the Executive Director when the Executive Director is absent.

Essential:

  • The Associate ED can articulate, demonstrate and support MCC U.S. values of faith in Christ, peace, justice, service and anti-oppression among MCC staff.
  • An advanced degree or 5 years related experience in areas of management, finance, HR, or high-level supervision experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise high level team of directors who together supervise the majority of the organization.
  • Flexibility in connecting supervisees to others, especially the Executive Director for communication when needed.
  • Experience in data driven analysis, envisioning, implementing and evaluating significant organizational initiatives and potential risks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, hold staff accountable for timeline and successful completion of goals, and negotiate potential differences that may arise within the organization.
  • Capacity to bring together groups and persons with divergent tasks within the organization to prioritize and accomplish agreed upon objectives in a timely manner as a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to model and develop spiritual practices among leadership staff.
  • English language fluency and strong written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, database systems, internet and email.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated successful administrative leadership in a church related mission/development organization or with an international non-governmental organization is preferred.
  • Understanding of and/or experience with the faith-based constituency groups of MCC.

Key Responsibilties

Relationships
The Associate Executive Director serves as the Chief Operating Officer for Mennonite Central Committee U.S. and frees up the Executive Director to focus on relationships with regional executive directors, member denominational bodies and governance support for the MCC U.S. Board. The Associate Executive Director supervises and cultivates relationships among MCC U.S. support services and program directors and encourages collaboration with their Canadian counterparts. The Associate Executive Director is expected to work under the supervision of the Executive Director to provide overall leadership for the relief, development and peace building work of MCC. The Associate ED is a member of the Leadership Team which includes the ED, Communications and Donor Relations Director, Organizational Development and Racial Equity Director. The Associate ED oversees the Management Team and is responsible for developing a strong positive team culture among MCC U.S. staff leadership.

Supervision
The Associate Executive Director is supervised by and reports to the MCC U.S. Executive Director. The Associate executive director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization and assures strong communication among program and support services departments and the Executive director to assure success. The Associate Executive Director, with regular consultation with the Executive Director, directly supervises the directors of international and national program, administrative services, IT, human resources, and financial services.

Competencies
The Associate Executive Director will lead the MCC U.S. staff in creative and innovative implementation of the vision, mission and priority objectives of MCC U.S. to accomplish the goals set forth in the MCC Canada/MCC U.S. Covenant and the Covenant of MCCs in the U.S. This person leads in strengthening working relationships among MCC U.S. leadership staff, as well as their counterparts in Canada, to enhance and enrich the mission of MCC U.S. The Associate Executive Director will build and empower the senior management team for MCC U.S. in exercising strategic leadership and in understanding the contextual realities and risks which MCC faces. The Associate Executive Director will cast vision, initiate and manage change, ensure accountability among staff, and will communicate effectively through listening, writing and speaking to staff. The Associate ED has demonstrated the ability to develop spiritual practices among leadership staff.

Independence
The Associate Executive Director can exercise a high level of independent action and decision-making to meet the goals established by the overall leadership of MCC U.S. The Associate Executive Director uses innovative and creative approaches to implement and evaluate organizational goals, exercising prudence and good judgment, all in consultation with the Executive Director. Performance is measured in terms of substantial impact on the success of the operations and program of the organization.

End Result
The Associate Executive Director directs activity and makes decisions which impact organization-wide program and operations. Under the supervision of the Associate Executive Director, the operational and program departments implement the goals and priorities of MCC U.S. to accomplish MCC’s mission. Partnership between MCC U.S. and MCC Canada leadership staff is strong for collaborative efforts.Major Responsibilities:

  • Lead in developing and implementing strong programs, with accompanying support services needed, within the mission of MCC (80%)
  • Work to create an empowering environment for all staff, shape strong partnerships with MCC Canada (20%)

Specific Tasks and Duties:

  • Provide regular supervision for all direct reports.
  • Participate in the monthly meetings of the regional executive directors (Directors Team) as a liaison to manage the MOU between MCC U.S. Management Team and the regions.
  • Lead the U.S. Management Team which meets monthly; work to build strong and successful leadership team culture to meet organizational priorities and goals. Develop spiritual practices among leadership staff.
  • Overall responsibility for fiscal, IT, human and programmatic risk management. Work closely with department to assess and analyze information in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that adequate goals and plans are in place for strategic planning and budget development for program and support services departments.
  • Build greater capacity for the organization to embrace change and value diversity among staff.
  • Lead policy management for MCC U.S. and collaborate with a Canadian counterpart for whole system policy management.
  • Other duties as necessary or assigned on a temporary basis.

Supervision: This role will supervise six senior leaders.

Travel Expectations: 15% – International trip 1x/year, travel to board meetings, etc.
