Sandbag Climate Campaign

Sandbag is a non-profit think tank which uses data analysis to build evidence-based campaigns on EU climate policy. We focus on policies such as the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and the decarbonisation of heavy industry.

Responsibilities

We are seeking an Analyst to help deepen our policy narratives on the topics of circularity, hydrogen, carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) and the EU ETS, to step up our input into the legislative process. This will involve assisting our team in:

  • Gathering intelligence (qualitative and quantitative) on technical potential, costs and other obstacles to the development of circularity, green hydrogen, CCS, steel;
  • Analysing policy proposals made by different political groups, and their impacts;
  • Fostering a network of contacts in the industry domain (manufacturers, experts, consultants, think tanks, government agencies…);
  • Developing online viewing tools on these topics;
  • Creating relevant analyses (data analysis, modeling, writing reports)
  • Contributing to recommendations on policy instruments related to industry, including carbon markets;
  • Contributing to outreach to policymakers, fellow NGOs and industry stakeholders.

 

This project is part of our wider involvement in EU climate policy analysis and may lead to working on connected topics as well.

Qualifications

The candidate will:

  • Have a science or economics degree from a top-tier university or French ‘Grande Ecole’
  • care passionately about fighting climate change; 
  • be highly numerate and comfortable with data analysis;
  • have a knack for finding information, public or private;
  • be a confident Excel user;
  • enjoy networking and establishing new professional relationships;
  • have excellent writing skills in English, with precision and attention to detail;
  • be able to understand technical material (legislation, research) and explain it effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences;
  • be a quick learner and a self-starter, happy working under their own initiative;
  • be happy working as part of a small organisation punching above its weight to achieve change;
  • have the necessary permits to work in the EU.

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • a masters degree;
  • some knowledge of EU climate policy and carbon markets;
  • some knowledge of industrial sectors (construction, steelmaking etc.);
  • data visualisation skills.
