The Malaria Vaccine Development Program Advisor will primarily support the ID/MAL USAID office] as a Credence Institutional Support Contractor (ISC). In this role, Malaria Division of the USAID Bureau for Global Health seeks an individual with expertise in malaria vaccine research and development or related disciplines to contribute to the Bureau for Global Health’s Malaria Division and the Agency’s overall malaria research and development efforts.

Malaria prevention and control is a major foreign assistance objective of the U.S. Government (USG). The Malaria Vaccine Development Program Technical Advisor will provide support to the USAID Malaria Vaccine Development Program (MVDP). USAID’s MVDP was initiated in the late 1960s in response to the termination of the first malaria eradication effort and since that time has contributed to the global effort towards a highly efficacious, durable and cost-effective vaccine to mitigate morbidity and mortality due to malaria as a part of malaria control programs in endemic areas. Historical achievements include the culture of the parasite, identification of the circumsporozoite protein comprising the only WHO-recommended vaccine (RTS,S/AS01), and the first clinical trial of a peptide-based malaria vaccine. Currently, the MVDP focuses on Plasmodium falciparum, the leading cause of malaria mortality and specifically the infectious stage (sporozoites) and the blood stages of the parasite, which causes clinical disease and death. Current MVDP implementation partners are the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC), the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and PATH Innovations in Malaria Vaccine (IMV) Development. WRAIR and NMRC also have a long history of involvement in creating and evaluating investigational malaria vaccines both preclinically and in the clinic and the field. The MVDP supports the Growth Inhibition Assay (GIA) Reference Center at NIAID. The USAID IMV contract with PATH supports the MVDP strategy in implementation of multiple research and development activities investigating possible viable vaccine approaches.

The Malaria Vaccine Development Program Technical Advisor will:

  • Contribute to MVDP strategic planning and technical implementation through MVDP partners, including reviewing malaria vaccine research protocols and project plans and analyzing and synthesizing data
