Terre des hommes

1. Context and background information

Created in 1960, the Foundation of Terre des hommes Lausanne (Tdh) mission is to defend and promote the rights of children, in humanitarian as well as development contexts. Today, Terre des hommes Foundation is the largest non-governmental organization (NGO) for children’s aid in Switzerland. Tdh implements projects and Programmes in more than 40 countries, including Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Syria. Over the last fifty years, Terre des hommes have developed several Programmes, in two core areas: healthcare and child protection.

Tdh Palestine was established in 1973 in response to child malnutrition in the West Bank, and currently has two sub offices, one in Jerusalem and the other in Gaza. Our intervention in Palestine focuses on supporting children in Humanitarian Crisis and Access to Justice. Tdh in Palestine has extensive experience in providing integrated child protection services to children with protection concerns, including children in conflict with the law, working children, distressed children, and out-of-schools children. Tdh provides multi-sectoral protection services to vulnerable children and their families, targeting especially child labour, injured children, out of schools, and gender-based violence (GBV). Tdh has been one of the main organisations providing services during wars and other crises, responding rapidly and proactively to the needs on the ground.

Tdh Jordan was established in 2007 in response to the Iraqi refugee crisis. The programme has since evolved into responding to various emergencies afflicting the country, including the Syrian refugee crisis. In 2013, Tdh established a Juvenile Justice programme, focused on protecting the rights of children in contact with the law, aiming to create a child friendly juvenile justice system in Jordan. Currently the programme works with the Syrian refugee camps, urban Syrian refugees and vulnerable host communities through several child focused interventions. Tdh has also built strong relationships with governmental stakeholders and other strategic partners including local Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) and Civil Society Organisations (CSO), to successfully deliver on our thematic priorities.
